Standing on a hill just outside the main village of Manoppello is the Santuario del Volto Santo. Please note the ornate carvings on the front doors. There is a lot of information written about the Veil of Veronica which is held here which depicts the face of Jesus' on a cloth. It is viewed by going up some steps around the area of the altar.
Many people miss that there is also a Museum in the church which can be found at the left at the back of the church. it contains not only religious relics but a whole collection of other items. Bit of a mish mash, but interesting never the less. Also there is an area of possessions and photos of loved ones that have been left behind to provide prayers for those who have gone to war etc. There are some brilliant photos of soldiers in their uniforms with giant hats. Unfortunately there are no descriptions in English so you have to just guess why they are there. I have been a couple of times just because there is so much to see and also the locals advise me that sometimes the face of Jesus shows him showing his teeth and other times it does not. For me it is a place of interest that is visited by a lot of pilgrims, including the Pope himself. Sometimes car rallies start from here. You also get the best view of New Year fireworks from this location.
Afterwards pop into the local bar in Manoppello and get a lovely Cafe Latte.

This is undoubtedly one of the best kept secrets in the world.
This houses the Volto Sancto - the burial cloth that covered Jesus' face.
Any skepticism is dispelled when you look at the science and measurements, which is a perfect fit with the Shroud of Turin. Really remarkable. An incredible blessing that I was able to experience .. and will again next time I go.

Wonderful old very famous church dating back to the 9th century. Great place for weddings witth lovely grounds and path to the village of Serramonacesca. 10min drive from our house (Olive Grove Farm) with lovely walk by the side of the church along a small river through the rocks and cliff faces. Ideal to do in morning with sun streaming through trees. Can walk for as long as you like then return on same path or go for long walk and return by different way. Children can paddle in the safe little "pond" areas created by the stream. On Bank Holidays can get a little crowded with local families having picnics. A must to do!

Looking at the Face of Christ at the moment of the Resurrection is life changing. His Face should be our focus.

I went here with a large group of Irish pilgrims recently. We were on our way to visit Padre Pio when we heard ohh this sanctuary. Well worth a visit, everything was explained by a very helpful German nun!

The view from the church is quite lovely and we thoroughly appreciated being able to gaze at the Volto Santo. It's amazing how this thin piece of fabric still even exists and then to have the image of Jesus Christ...which perfectly matches the image on the Shroud...visible. Priceless.
It's definitely a place for pilgrims and the museum upstairs is eclectic, but interesting to see - there are local reptiles on display alongside clothing from other countries and photographs from families in the area over the years. The back room to the left of the altar has a nice collection of pictures from Pope Benedict XVI visit and comparisons made with the Volto Santo and various other images painted/sculpted over the years.

To the faithful it is a sacred place of pilgrimage. Lots of people come to worship.

Otherwise there is an interesting historical icon.

The church is located on the hill which gives a beautiful view of the area. Inside, behind the altar you will see an image of Jesus on a piece of cloth...a deep spiritual and religious experience

This church displays a piece of cloth-like material with a very unusual image - the risen Christ. It is the exact same image as in the Holy Shroud of Turin, down to the last detail, except that the eyes are open.

We were very fortunate because when we visited the shrine, we were toured by a wonderful German nun who showed us the image and how it seemed to completely change when bathed in different lights.

If you are a Catholic, you need to visit this shrine. It is literally a miraculous place.
