- Graeme CMartley, United Kingdom38 contributionsNice place for a stroll ( and hopefully see some wildlife)Nice riverside walk just off the ocean road. I stopped off on the off chance and spent an hour going down the path. The manicured area is nice and then you are into a forest trail, which was a bit overgrown after 500 m or so. I saw 2 koala ( the first trees on the manicured area) and met a friendly swamp wallaby which was a bit of a novel experience for me. First time seeing either of these in the wild and really enjoyed it. There was a shop near the stop off but shut when I got there. Seen a few negative comments and don't really understand why, it is free, good parking, nice place for a stroll ( even if just to see the river and birds), and a decent chance to see koala or wallaby. I do however agree with one of the reviews that wildlife wonders up the road is excellent, so do give that a go.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 5, 2024
- Roma C4 contributionsKoalas xxxxWe saw 4 koalas!. First time I had ever seen them in their natural habitat. The key is to look up almost to the top of the trees and they looked like a fluffy ball. Once I saw one I could see the others easier. Not exactly where I thought they would be. I was looking lower in the trees initially. So glad I saw them, beautiful location! - tresag7201Blenheim, New Zealand546 contributionsKoalasWe were very lucky to see a total of 3 wild koalas and 2 Wallaby. Koalas for us were approx 3km up from Store . We unfortunately did not see any near the Store , so drive up Grey River Road in a 2 wheel drive (dry dirt road) . Please if you do drive, drive slowly due to down hill traffic and wild life! Kenner River is approx 23km from Apollo Bay and 5.4km from Wye River. Off the Great Ocean Road.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 27, 2024

Follow the uphill track from Kafe Koala and there are often koala in the trees. They are tricky to spot, as they are not very active and I had a couple pointed out to me. I got some excellent photos on my phone.
There were also a very noisy flock of parrots, perched on low hanging branches, hoping for food.
I would definitely recommend stopping here to catch a glimpse of koala in the wild. Seeing koala so close and in the wild, both here and in Hordern Vale, made my day.

There is a small cafe near the Kennet river and the Great Ocean Road. Nearby were two Koala's in separate trees. They were pretty soporific but still magical to see in the wild after seeing many in the various zoos.

Quite surprised to wines the koala at the entrance of the park. We spent so much time to film the cuties and then went to a wrong way to search for more koala and birds. We lucky to see koala and bird around there..

We were taken to this area by our guide. To be fair, he did warn us prior to visiting, that there had been little in the way of koala sightseeing that month. Thankfully we were taken to much better spot near Apollo Bay. So for us, this area was a thumbs down.

Regular stop for tour groups on Great Ocean Road to spot koalas in the wild, but only worth it if passing. We drove up the dirt road couple km and saw three, although either high up or slightly far away. Far better experience at Wildlife Wonders futher along the road at Apolo Bay.

While I absolutely loved seeing the nature here, the hike and the koalas surrounded by king parrots, I am giving this place a bad review. People are advised not to feed the wildlife and none is actually following that as everyone wants a hot pic with parrots.
Get some law enforcement there and this place can be a 5. Until then, I'm downvoting.

We weren't very adventurous, stopping in the car park by Kafe Koala, just off the Great Ocean Road, and walking just a short distance up the dirt road beside the cafe. There were lots of parrots in the trees and we were lucky enough to see a Koala nearby too. You do need some serious patience and wildlife spotting skills, because the Koala are well camouflaged and in our case distant, and had another couple not spotted it first and made us aware I doubt we would have noticed. Photography can be a challenge too, because a digital zoom on a phone is unlikely to be up to the job. Even an optical zoom on a camera needs a very steady hand or friendly shoulder to balance on. But for all that, we were glad we stopped.
There are some decent port a loos on the way back to the car park, just by the cafe.

We saw only two Koalas sleeping, perched at the top of one tree although this is (a Koala Walk ?). The place is very grassy, wet & muddy from rains & forested. Signs warning of venomous snakes gives one the fear as you walk along, constantly watching your steps & advancing very carefully. There were some kangaroos near the entrance of the park - in the distance on an enclosed area, besides a caravan. The Kafe Koala and General Store were closed - up for sale . Frankly there isn't much to see here, not worth to make the trip all the way here . And risked getting bitten by venomous snakes!

My wife and I visited this place as part of our holiday along The Great Ocean Road. We managed to see a Koala up on a gum tree.
Apart from that, there is not much to see here. We had a walk and left.

Tips:
- at the beginning of Grey River Road, only 20m or so from the Caravan park entrance, several koalas often hang out in the low branches of those gum trees (only a metre or so above your head!) and so I recommend parking and walking around on foot for the first 300m or so of road
- return to the car and slowly drive up the road, keeping an eye out for the many other koalas perched high up in the tall gum trees. Follow the S bends, then once up the hill on the straight there are usually quite a few in the trees
- there are glowworms at the picnic area up the road which are amazing at night
If you found these tips useful I'd greatly appreciate a helpful vote :)

Hi!
Planning to do the Great Ocean Road Trip by car with my family. Is there an entrance fee to this Park?
Thanks in advance :))
Written April 25, 2018
No, there is no parking fee. You can pull off in the side way or, even move around with the car through the park.

Is dit een wandeling op goed bewandelbare paden in de eucalyptusbossen?
Written December 10, 2017
None at all. Plan to spend nothing but time here. There are rosellas (a type of parrot) that you can hand feed and then take your time and stroll the path and I'm sure you will find some koalas.

Is there a certain period of the day that you get to see the koala? I may be passing Kennett river only 6pm during the trip
Written October 21, 2016
you may see them on the trees throughout the day, 6pm should be as good as other times
Written October 21, 2016
Could you please tell me if you walk to see the Koalas from the Kenett river shop? Is that where it is?
Written October 21, 2015
Hi Caroline, yes you can park at the store and walk up grey river road. Alternatively, you can drive up grey river road and park on the side as the road is quite wide. There are koalas all the way along usually
