My husband and I were searching the internet for a small group tour specifically covering the Puglia region of Italy when we came across Secret Italia Tours. Their Puglia/Basilicata itinerary fit the bill perfectly but we were at first hesitant to book the trip because Secret Italia was very small compared to the bigger and more well-known tour companies out there. After reading reviews and speaking personally with Aldo by phone several times, not only did we book the Puglia tour, Aldo also worked with us to put together a private four day add-on tour of the Amalfi coast. We can honestly say it was one of the most wonderful travel experiences we have ever had! Hotels: All accommodations were in small boutique hotels located in or very close to the city center. Each one was unique and offered many amenities like free WiFi (though one hotel had very weak WiFi in rooms but delivered a strong signal in common areas), a breakfast buffet each morning, and air conditioning (real a/c, not like the pitiful a/c found in most Italian hotels). Included meals: In addition to breakfast, included meals each day, either a lunch or a dinner, highlighted the specialties of the region and left us all quite full and very happy! From the olives, cheeses and Salumi, to the grilled vegetables, fresh pastas and seafood, pizza, taralli, and luscious desserts, we were simply in food heaven! Tours: While we stayed in four different cities, we also visited many small towns along the way with ample free time for exploring. There were also wine tastings, an olive oil tasting, a hands-on bread-making experience, Sunday dinner at a family-run working farm, and a cheese making demonstration, among other things, which were all informative and fun. Tour Guide: Our trip was made even more enjoyable by Paola, our guide. Not only was she very well-organized, professional, knowledgeable, warm and friendly, she also had a wonderful sense of humor. Truly a delight to be with! All other elements of the trip like transfers to/from airport or train station, luggage handling, bus transport throughout the tour, communications regarding payments, final itinerary and other pertinent info, were all excellent. During our separate personalized Amalfi tour, the outstanding service continued with great drivers and tour guides as we visited Amalfi, Ravello, Positano, Sorrento and Pompei. Aldo checked in with us daily to make sure everything was perfect! We just made a deposit for another tour with Secret Italia this coming September— next stop Provence! If you’re thinking about using Secret Italia Tours for your next vacation, don’t hesitate another moment. You will NOT be disappointed!

This was our second tour with Secret Italia and, just like our first tour, everything was well researched, planned and organized. All of the hotels on the tour were unique boutique hotels of high quality and were very service oriented. For example, Air France managed to lose our luggage during our connection in Paris but we hardly noticed because the staff at the Domus Zamittello Hotel in Valletta did all of the work to retrieve it. When we returned to the hotel the following evening our luggage was in our room. Malta is a very beautiful and interesting country and our guide Cynthia was very knowledgable about everything we saw. The itinerary was very well designed to give us a full sense of what the country is like. At first we thought that Malta would be like Italy, and there are some similarities, but it is a very different country. We had a good opportunity to discover this through both Cynthia's insights and by having a chance to meet and mix with the locals many times during the tour. The meals that were included with the tour were authentic to Malta and ranged from very good to exceptional. Being in a small group makes a big difference, we went places that could not handle large groups. We have been very happy with Secret Italia and plan on taking more of their tours in the future.

We can thoroughly recommend Secret Italia’s small group tour of Malta and Gozo. Cynthia Zammit Maempel was our excellent guide. Her extensive and wide-ranging knowledge of everything Maltese, especially history and culture, gave our tour experience a great deal more depth than what happens with many guides. Cynthia’s main strength was her ability to judge what we were most interested in and to adjust the daily routines to our interests. We appreciated her flexibility very much. We can also recommend touring outside the peak summer period. We took our tour in November 2019 and even though Valletta was crowded with cruise ship tourists in the middle of the day, almost all the other sites we visited we had to ourselves. To capture the atmosphere of cities such as Mosta, Rabat and Mdina as well as the ancient prehistoric sites of Hagar, Tarxien and Ggantija with very few other tourists was a real privilege. Our highlights of the whole tour were the hilltop fortified town of Mdina and the ancient 5,600 year old free standing temple of Ggantija on the island of Gozo. The tour was extensive but well paced. The hotels were great and the mixture of different Maltese eating experiences was well thought out and very enjoyable. If you are considering taking an in-depth tour of Malta and Gozo with Secret Italia ask for Cynthia to be your guide. You won’t be disappointed. Peter & Pamela

I recently did two tours back to back with this company and I have no hesitation in saying this was the best tour company I have experienced. Everything was done to an excellent standard. The accommodation, the multi night stays, the included meals, the tour guides, the excursions/activities, the bus, the driver, the pace, the transfers!! I truly have no negatives apart from the fact I personally would have liked a little longer in some of the smaller villages we visited. Ask me any questions you like!

Puglia, Secret Italia and Paola -- a trifecta! I can't speak highly enough of the planning that went into the creation of this tour and the way it was executed, including the selection of (high end) hotels, tour stops and restaurants, the unique experiences arranged for us and the level of personal service we experienced. Secret Italia was first rate. Kudos to owners Aldo and Katrin. My husband and I have traveled extensively, mostly independently. Although we had not traveled with Secret Italia, the itinerary, reviews and small group size persuaded us to give them a try. I'm thankful we did. Paola's expertise, the company of similarly-inclined travellers and the unique experiences arranged for our group, including a visit to a cheese farm, bread-baking, olive oil and wine tasting. We also visited museums and churches, and walked extensively through the historical centers of the region's cities. Spread throughout the tour were meals at wonderful restaurants where the wine flowed and the courses kept coming. We covered most of Puglia and also ventured into neighboring Basilicata, staying in Matera, the European Capital of Culture this year. A word about Paola, our guide throughout the tour. Organized, highly knowledgeable with a heart of gold. Her great love of Puglia was only overshadowed by her care for us. She was tuned in to everyone's needs. Her pacing was excellent; she covered it all but we never felt rushed. An A+. We would definitely travel with Secret Italia again.
