About
It started about 10 years ago as a butterfly farming project for export. Over time it was transforming into an area that offers a diversity of environments allowing for a wide range of niches where there are many species, ceasing to be a simple butterfly to become a true Ecological Garden. Apart from a butterfly and frog garden, we offer bird watching tours, wildlife spotting, and a camping site.

A place built with love.
Mar 2021
From a 20x20 M plot of bare land in 1995 to the lush rainforest it is today, William and Krystal have grown a thriving butterfly operation and the tour they gave us was totally eye opening. How could the vegetation grow this lush in such a short time, with such an abundance of varieties of both flora and the beautiful butterflies?! It’s beautiful.
It is obvious this is more than a business to them as their passion for this forest and its residents suffuses all their stories and the excitement they express in their explanations. They are reclaiming the rainforest.
Beyond learning the lifecycle of butterflies and seeing so many varieties in their stages of development, William showed us a sloth, and found for us the rare white bats (tiny little white bundles nesting on the underside of a heliconia leaf). Then Krystal took over and pointed out colorful frogs and birds she located by their calls.
As if the personal tour wasn’t enough, Krystal showed us how chocolate is made, using cacao pods from the trees growing on their land, then fed us a delicious (and bountiful) typical casado lunch.

Reforestation success!
Mar 2021 • Friends
This family embodies good stewardship. They bought desolate land and have a successfully reforested the area where we can see butterflies, birds, reptiles, and more! We also had lunch there which was DELICIOUS! Homemade goodness that you can really taste, it makes a tremendous difference! Love the place, the people are even better!!!

Hidden gem
Jan 2021 • Couples
Such a nice little gem this place. We had a wonderful tour guided by Krystal where we've seen many species of wildlife and learned so much from her. The rest of the crew was also helpful and friendly. We've also joined for the dinner and it was quite a feast. The whole garden project is a great initiative and deserves as much support as possible. Highly recommended, you won't regret it.

Fantastic location to visit!
Nov 2020
William and Krystal are naturalist who love to share their passion. Pierella Ecological Gardens is Beautiful and has so many butterflies, birds and animals to see. I learned so much during my visit about the relationship between the land and the all that lives here. Everything here has a purpose giving back to the land that supports the butterflies, birds, and animals is a beautiful lesson. It is worth the trip!

Enchanted Garden!
Mar 2019 • Couples
Calling all nature lovers!! This place is a little nature heaven. It has exceeded our expectations on all accounts. We initially intended to just drop in for an hour (or so) of a self-guided tour.... , we ended up staying 5. This jungle garden felt very special from the moment we stepped into it.. The hosts and associated coworkers were extremely nice and knowledgeable about all living things on their property. We would have never found out all the creatures on our own. They have a genius set up, in various mini habitats and eco systems, where we encountered various species accordingly. This place is heaven for birds! We photographed about 30 different species right there!! William used his creativity to construct several attraction spots, where the birds come to feed. You can then observe and photograph many different birds, as they indulge in banana & papaya feast! What a show of colors and shapes! We even got to see endangered green macaws! 🐦🦜 Such a delight for the eyes. William & Kristal also help with raising butterflies and have a special enclosure where you can go and see all the beautiful kinds, including blue morphos.🦋 It feels like you are in an enchanted garden.
We were also treated to the traditional Costa Rican soup & fruit meal-DELICIOUS and so nutritious. I will not even mention at least 3 cups of coffee and yummy desert pancakes we were offered there as well. That's part of their hospitality tour! All in all it was an amazing experience and certainly a highlight of our 2 week stay in Costa Rica. It's an amazing place run by 2, hard working dedicated individuals. Come and visit if you are in the area, or make a point to add it to your itinerary when planning a trip. You will have a 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ experience, I promise!👍

So much wildlife to see here
Mar 2018 • Couples
We booked a tour and lunch after seeing the great reviews on TripAdvisor and were not disappointed. Crystal was our guide as William could not be there that day. We started off with some birdwatching right after parking our car and were amazed at the quantity of birds that came in to feed off of the local fruits she had laid out. Then we walked around the trails with Crystal as she pointed out birds, monkeys, a sloth, 2 hummingbird babies in a nest on a leaf, and so much more wildlife. Then Crystal brought us back to the little outdoor kitchen where a meal had been prepared for us. The food was quite good. After that I stayed behind due to feeling some major jetlag while she took my boyfriend out on another trail to see even more wildlife. This was my boyfriend's first real exposure to the diversity of wildlife in Costa Rica and he was completely amazed! I too was surprised to see the great variety in this small ecological garden they had created. We definitely felt we got more than our money's worth on the tour and recommend it.

A great success story & a family passionate about what they gave created.

Crystal & William, along with their boys are very welcoming and proud to show visitors around their farm. Not just butterflies, but lots of different frogs, insects, animals and birds have made this place their home.
The tour was informative and fun, Crystal is good at making guests look for things rather than just pointing them out.
We had a lovely lunch too.
We would encourage visitors to go to Pierella Garden and experience seeing lots of birds and animals in a free environment.

One of the best of many international experiences-GO!
Sep 2018 • Solo
Having traveled in many countries, there are occasionally experiences that do not live up to expectations. This experience completely exceeded the high hopes I had when setting out in the morning. Seeing animals in an enclosure is NOT what you will find here. This is Cost Rica at its very best. Friendly, wild, natural, peaceful, bountiful. You will find gregarious, knowledgeable and gracious hosts treating you with constant kindness and enthusiasm as they share the impressive results of many years of good stewardship of the land. You will experience tastes, sounds and sights that are not the everyday hum-drum. Flora, fauna, and the good people at Pierella Ecological Garden are superb. My memorable and unique experiences I had here are what I will carry home and mean so much more than a tee-shirt souvenir. I hope to be back in Costa Rica again one day to visit again and bring my family. It was amazing.

A real highlight on our visit to Costa Rica
Apr 2018
Thanks to TripAdvisor we discovered this hidden gem on the edge of the rainforest. It was our first introduction to the Costs Rican flora and fauna, and by the end of our visit an absolute highlight and experience to remember. Owners of Pierella, William & Kristal we’re not only warm and friendly but extremely knowledgeable and at one with nature. With William’s enthusiasm and immense knowledge he introduced us to many beautiful and fascinating creatures that lay within his land which he has reclaimed from deforestation over the last 20 years with hard work and dedication to create a small ecological haven. . Birds, butterflies, insects, frogs, three little white bats curled up sleeping under a leaf, sloths, toucans and much more. The smallest bird is the amazing humming bird, and we were privileged to experience the smallest of the species in Costa Rica hovering around us in close proximity at frequent intervals. No larger than a slender bumble bee! With much enthusiasm and fun Kristal had us making chocolate from the cocoa grown on their land. An absolute highlight.
