- SuperMita712 contributionsVisit in the springVisited Glimmingehus on a Sunday at the end of April with both adults and children. Took part in a guided tour where the guide was incredibly good, had such empathy and made the visit interesting! There was also a small museum with information at the castle grounds. Well worth a visit.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 30, 2024
- Birgitta-KennethSolna, Sweden1,636 contributionsOld castleOne of Swedens (belonged to Denmark back then!) oldest castles with absolutely massive walls (2 metres) and a colourful history. Do try to take the guided tour because our guide was really, really good in telling us the story of this castleVisited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 7, 2024
- emmy tKalmar County, Sweden198 contributionsNice old medieval castleWell-preserved medieval castle with a lot of information. The staff at the ticket office may not be the most enthusiastic, but hopefully there are more guides and employees who are more passionate about their profession. Nice excursion if you feel like being a bit cultural and learning something new. We tested the digital guide with tablets and headphones. Worked well.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 5, 2024

Glimmingehus is a medieval era castle located at Simrishamn Municipality, Scania in southern Sweden. It is the best preserved medieval stronghold in Scandinavia. It was built 1499-1506, during an era when Scania formed a vital part of Denmark, and contains many defensive arrangements of the era, such as parapets, false doors and dead-end corridors, 'murder-holes' for pouring boiling pitch over the attackers, moats, drawbridges and various other forms of death traps to surprise trespassers and protect the nobles against peasant uprisings. The lower part of the castle's stone walls are 2.4 meters thick and the upper part 1.8 meters.

We didn't visit the museum but went on a guided tour which was interesting. The inside don't have any furnitures for visualizing but the guide had great knowledge and could answer all questions. Small groups, max 20, can't pre-book. We bought tickets at 11, went for a coffee and came back at 13. A Friday in September it was very few visitors which suited us well.

Glimmingehus is located in the middle of the Scanian plain on Ă–sterlen: A massive 30-meter long medieval castle with thick walls, 12 meters wide and almost 26 meters high. The castle began to be built in 1499 by the Danish knight Jens Holgersen Ulfstand as a boast at a time when SkĂĄne belonged to Denmark (but he probably also needed some protection from his enemies).
Today, this is the best-preserved medieval castle in the Nordics, and findings indicate that it was equipped with expensive and exclusive furnishings and also had parapets, false doors, holes to pour boiling tar into, a drawbridge and other death traps as defenses.
Glimmingehus was probably not inhabited for more than a few generations before the family built a more comfortable residence on the farm and the large castle was converted into a granary. During the Scanian War 1675-1679, demolition attempts were made, but they failed and the castle was finally donated to the Vitterhetsakademin in 1924. The years 1935-38 saw an extensive renovation and the castle began to be shown to the public. There is now a museum shop as well as a restaurant and café here. During the summer, several guided tours are held daily. We parked the car, bought an entrance ticket at the kiosk, joined one of the shows and had a nice tour that started in the ground floor with well, back cabin, kitchen, food storage and heating device. Up one flight of stairs you will find the remains of the burgomaster's residence, two flights of stairs up was the knight's hall. The lady of the castle and the children also stayed here. The visit was very nicely conducted and gave an excellent picture of how the nobility lived at the beginning of the 16th century.
But, in the name of honesty: Was this great tourist destination all the Nordics could achieve in terms of luxury at a time when the rest of Europe was building elegant cathedrals and airy fairytale castles?

We arrived about 14:30 and it was not sure we would be able to see the inside seeing they closed at 16:00. Definitely no guided tours so we decided to just visit the outside area. Guess if we were surprised when a women who works there came out and cordoned off the road in and told us that we had to pay just to walk around the outside!! Are we kidding? Pay to walk around the outside?? Absolutely ridiculous. Totally disappointed by this attitude.

All right, a little bad with information about the building for those who didn't go to the screening. Not worth paying several hundred in admission for. Especially not when the incredibly unpleasant woman at the ticket booth would have made us turn around before we even entered if it wasn't for the fact that we had already paid in advance.

A good excursion point when you are on the outskirts. Authentic manor house, where you can sense the medieval atmosphere. As a special plus, you can buy coffee with cakes and bread from the area's most acclaimed confectioner. That was delicious!

I was quite impressed with this castle. Its very well preserved and the entry fee includes a guided tour. I think the english speaking one is at 15:00 (3pm) but just check before you go as it probably changes. The guide we had was very informative and fun. We toured all the floors and were given great information about what went on in each room. At the beginning of the tour he explained the history and why it was built and by who. Well worth the visit if you like nordic history and castles.

Maybe i just have a different understanding of the castle, and I set my expectations too high, but it was not much interesting.

I think it's important to remember your history to know why we are where we are.
Glimmingehus is a near perfectly preserved landmark in Scania. If you are close by and like history, this is the place to go!

This place offers a nice glimpse into one of the strongest fortifications in the south of sweden from the 1600.
Theres a little museum you can enter on site which is free but if you want to head into the castle itself you will need to buy a ticket for a small group showing which for the time being is 20 visitors max. They have a guided tour every hour so if you want to venture inside the castle make sure you arrive in time so you can buy tickets for the next showing.

Hej Rolf!
