Good ski area
Jan 2020 • Friends
Very nice ski area, not so far from Geneva. Spent a few days here and it was a great experience. From my judgement it seem to fit both families with kids and a bunch of crazy grown up friend. I will return with one of the constellations.

We are very glad that you enjoyed our ski area. Indeed, we are 1 hour and a half from Geneva by car. Yes, Villars is very loved by families, but can also be a great place to come with a bunch of friends. Hope to see you soon !

New ticketing system - a nightmare!
Jan 2020 • Couples
The company recently decided to adopt a new internet tickeing system that just doesn't work. The system is advertised as it could help you speed up your access (no lines etc.), it doesn't accept swisspass as a rfid card (so you pay 5fr more non refundable), so i had to buy the ticket and go exchange it at the ski station. Only one ticket station accepts online tickets
and clearly it's the one further
away from public transportation (you have to take another bus) and you discover this only after trying to exchange in another ticket point (after 10min in line with not many information from the chasier:frustracome ting). My advice: buy the ticket when you arrive.

Outside this: the ski station is really nice, you should go!

Best Ski experience
Dec 2019
We recently visited Gryon ski center. It was heavy snowfall there and the experience was out of the world. I would recommend anyone planning to visit now or in next 3 weeks.

Mid size resort great for all round skiers
Jan 2019 • Friends
If you like to get up and about, toggle between coffee then lunch on the mountain and ski in between til 4ish on lots of reds and blues, this is the place.

Take in the Crazy Moose for a late lunch then scoot back to the village, or skin up there as your days exercise, of take the train.. all catered for including non skiing grannies

Family resort but Switzerland is expensive for the British
Apr 2019
Villars is a very family friendly resort which does not have any stag dos or trips of that nature.
The town has very few lively bars and is not a destination if you want lots of apres ski! There is virtually done!
What is does offer are quiet slopes( especially at Easter it’s like private skiing) which you cannot get lost on. Loads of great mountain restaurants, great ski schools and a very relaxing environment.
Ideal for kids between 3- 16 and then they will be off to Morzine

Excellent skiing and friendly resort
Feb 2019 • Family
We went to Villars twice during the past ski season and we were thoroughly satisfied with the overall experience. The resort is easily accessible by road, even in bad conditions (one of our visits coincided with extremely heavy snowfalls and almost zero visibility on the roads), it has some good restaurants and the entire resort can be managed by foot. The ski slopes are served by a gondola and by a train. The train trip up to Bretaye (the end of the line at about 1800 m) is an adventure in itself with stunning scenery and dramatic views. The skiing is good, suitable for all beginner and intermediate skiers. Recommended.

Family Friendly Resort
Feb 2019 • Family
Logistics: We flew to Geneva Airport, rented a car, got some groceries and were in our chalet in Villars in less than 2 hours. The first 2/3 of the trip is interstate (watch out for the remote speed cameras). The last 1/3 of the trip is through a beautiful valley and then a climb to Villars. The climb to Villars may scare some Americans because the road is narrow and has multiple switchbacks. On the way up, you are hugging the mountain. On the way down, you are very aware of the lack of guardrails. We definitely recommend a 4-wheel drive vehicle. It is also a good idea to carry/rent chains for your tires.

Money: Avoid the currency exchange kiosks at the airport. They take 18% of your money. We were quoted an 82% exchange rate, which is awful, considering the Swiss franc and US dollar have a 99% exchange rate. Use the bank ATMs, not the Exchange ATMs. There are several ATMs in Villars. My bank charged $6 for each withdrawal. You can do the math, but if you take out $200 and it costs $6, that is only a 3% charge. If you withdraw $400, it is only a 1.5% charge. This is much better than using the exchanges at the airport and paying 18%.

Villars: The town is very picturesque and quaint. Almost everyone speaks English. It has many ski rental shops and two grocery stores. The grocery prices are reasonable but you may want to buy some of your groceries in Geneva. There are restaurants in town, but I do not know anything about them. We chose to cook at our chalet and did not dine out. There is a train station in the middle of town. You can take the little ski train up the mountain to Bretaye. You can also take a larger train down the mountain and then connect with another train to Geneva. Some residents of Villars commute to Geneva every day by train. It takes 2 hours to do so.

Skiing & Weather: Villars is at a relatively low elevation. The highest part of the ski area is 2120 meters which is 6955 feet. Therefore, rain, fog and visibility can be an issue. There are no week-long passes. They do sell two-day passes, but the savings is minimal. I suggest being flexible on which days you ski and buying the ski passes based on the weather forecast. If visibility is an issue, I suggest you ski over to Les Diablerets because the runs are tree-lined and provide perspective to help see the slopes. Whenever you ski during poor visibility on a wide open slope, such as Villars, you can lose all perspective, equilibrium and really feel unsafe.

Ski passes: The ski pass looks like a credit card. There is a $5 initial charge when you buy your first ski pass. The card can be re-loaded after the initial purchase. The great thing is that the ski pass includes the ski-train from Villars up to Bretaye, all the gondolas and all the ski lifts. There are turnstiles (like subways) for every lift or gondola. You do not need to show your pass. The sensor on the turnstile reads the pass. Put the pass in your jacket pocket on your left side because that is where the sensor is.

Maps, Labels, and Ratings: Switzerland is very different. The lifts have names. The slopes/runs do not. In Switzerland, Blue is the easiest, Red is intermediate, and Black is most difficult. From my perspective, many of the red runs would be rated as a black run in the US. In the US, the difficulty/color of the slopes are clearly labeled at the top of the slope. In Switzerland, most slopes are not clearly marked, if at all. The ski map is not specific. It covers a lot of square kilometers and it may not be practical to have the detail we are used to in the US. If you are a skier that uses the map while on the ski lift to plan your next run, this will be difficult.
