Seeing this flyer with an image of Max Ernst drew me by bus today to Sils-Maria to the Robbi gallery's exhibition "The Oberengadin in painting, drawing and photography". When I read this text, I thought the 'special' exhibition (Sonderausstellung) was going to have pictures by some of the other artists listed in the flier - apart from Ernst himself - e.g. Holder Chagall Dix and Kokoschka. But no. There is that one solitary piece from 1935 by Max Ernst, but no work at all by any of the the others. The other private galleries in the area which do not charge admission are as good as this one which does. Distinctly underwhelmed.

We visited this small gallery during our recent stay in Sils Maria and got to learn the tragic story of this local artist who showed great promise as a young man but then suffered a breakdown at age 34 that hobbled him for the rest of his life -- he barely painted anything for nearly 50 years afterwards. It's a shame that his life took such a tragic turn. Some of Robbi's early portraits were lovely -- very expressive character studies -- while some of his landscapes beautifully captured light and the seasons. For years, Robbi's work was mostly forgotten until it was rediscovered in the 1980s and, eventually, preserved in this museum. Since the collection is small, it doesn't take very long to see it. While it might not be a show-stopping museum, it still has several gems that speak to the artist's early promise and interesting back story. If you're in the area, the Robbi Museum is well worth a short visit.
