About
Gruyères Castle has stood proudly atop a verdant hill in the heart of Switzerland since the 13th century. Surrounded by the magnificent panorama of the Alpine foothills, the medieval fortress houses prestigious collections that bear witness to its long and rich history. The treasures to be found within its walls include the capes of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the intricate stained-glass windows dating from the Middle Ages; the frescoes commissioned by the bailiffs under the Ancien Régime; paintings by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and the troubadour decorations of the Salle des Chevaliers, created at Gruyères in the 19th century by a colony of passionate artists. From its ramparts to its French-style gardens, from the guard room to its romantic salons, Gruyères Castle takes you on an adventure through eight centuries of art, history and legends.

    Great château
Beautifully restored castle- we combined this with the cheese factory tour for a reduced price. The information brochure about the castle tells the history of it and how it came into government hands. In each room of the castle there is information about the particular room. You can walk around the gardens, see the chapel and get a really good feel for how the castle was. We caught the train from Lausanne, arrived at Gruyère at about 9.30. Spent about 45 minutes at the cheese factory then spent an hour at the castle, had lunch in the village and we were back in Lausanne by 3.30pm. Great day out.

    Modern art mixed in
Cool old castle. The history of the place was more interesting than I was expecting. The modern art mixed in was jarring though. Free with the Swiss Pass but the receptionist didn’t seem to believe me, I had to prove it by showing her the Swiss Pass website and even then she consulted her colleague before letting us go through- there was definitely a language barrier so I’m not really sure about the whole exchange.

    A Nice Visit
This is well worth a visit. They've done a good job maintaining the castle and it's an interesting short tour. They have explained the history very well and each room has explanations in English as well as other languages. There is parking outside the village and an interesting walk through the village before you get to the castle.

An amazing castle located at the top of the mountain.
Adjacent to the castle there is a small village, with narrow streets and souvenir shops.
Downstairs there are extensive gardens.
I especially liked the HR.GIGER museum that designed the monsters for the ALIEN movie

We greatly enjoyed half a day walking around this castle and the little town. We had a wonderful meal, drank from the fountain the center of town, shopped and just had a ton of fun!

The only downside to this whole experience was the modern art exhibit in the castle. Maybe the owners think it is boring to walk through the old castle and experience the beautiful rooms with original paintings and tapestries and furniture? Not for us! It was a bit of an eye-sore to have to see a distorted Mikey Mouse painting hanging on walls hundreds of years older than Walt Disney. Convergence is never a good thing. But overall, I can't but give this place 5 stars.

A visit to the castle is worth it, I had a discounted price for being student. However, the inside of the castle is not that amazing, it is an average castle. I was expecting to see more like the garden labyrinth but somehow I could only see it from the windows, I think the garden was closed. It was cool because it had snowed so the pictures have a special vibe. I went on foot from the train station to the castle, it is no problem, no need to take a bus.

Ok, we didn't go inside the castle (was closed at that time due to some sneaky virus that took over the world).
But we were surprised to learn that most of the grounds in and around the castle were open and free to roam around. You can walk around the gardens, get up to the walls, walk around the castle itself (except for a small section). The castle itself is well preserved and well taken care of. The views are amazing with the mountains and countryside in the back. And the track around the castle is a nice little stroll. Lots of photo ops, some benches to take a break underneath a tree. It's a fantastic castle in a charming old town. Either you go inside or not, this is a place not to be missed.

It is nice castle, if you have seen other castles, well... there is nothing new on this one. If you are in Gruyeres, I guess it is a muss. You can take nice pictures from outside really, no need to pay CHF 12

When I visited there was an exhibition of a modern artist, which it is great in one hand, on the other, well it is weird to see old and new stuff together. Most of the pieces from the exhibition are not what I would call "happy" so it is even weirder.

The lady at the entrance forgot to give me by change back, she was giving some maps and coupons and stuff, I did not realize she did not give me my change back... so I ended up paying CHF 20 instead of 12 :(

My visit to Gruyeres did not go well, so I am going all "Karen" here...

Very interesting and gives one a nice understanding of swiss heritage. Simple, correct, and nicely explained, with rooms designed to give you the feel of the past. Done in the „swiss“ style, tour is simple and pleasant.

This is one of the most charming castle villages in Switzerland. We unfortunately arrived too late this time to go in the actual castle, but enjoyed walking around it and taking in the view of the surrounding area. They were set up for August 1st celebrations so we were able to enjoy music in the square, Alphorns and some other live music which really added to the atmosphere.

Gruyeres was the first castle stop of my vacation in Switzerland. I think it was the perfect first stop.

The walls surrounding the city area of the castle gave great insight into how castles and walls were built to protect the cities and the people. The walled-in city also was charming with shops and restaurants lining the cobble-stone street leading up to the castle. Two things that are a must to buy here are the meringues and the cheese.

Walking through the preserved rooms of the castle and enjoying the beautiful views of the grounds was breathtaking.

Located in the famous old town of Gruyeres, this castle or Chateau is well worth visiting. Many of the rooms are well decorated with furniture and pictures. There is a 20 minute video that given you an overall history of the castle located by the entrance.

We love the expansive courtyard. It is, indeed, photographic. The Kings Room is something not to be missed. I also enjoyed the art of Patrick Woodroffe. Using transparencies the artwork is located up a narrow staircase. My wife has claustrophobia and just could not view these unique pictures.

The castle overlooks the famous Gruyeres valley. We were visiting on a rainy day and it was still magical.

We also enjoyed going to the Restaurant at Hotel de Ville for lunch and had a beer at the Giger Bar with its unique artwork. We also visited and enjoyed the Gruyeres Cheese Factory which is by the train station.
