Overview
More
HR GIGER IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS SWISS ARTISTS. He was awarded an « Oscar » in 1978 in Hollywood for the film « Alien ». He is the designer of Alien and different other biomechanical creatures. The artist was born in Coire in 1940. His dream became truth when he bought St-Germain’s castle in Gruyeres, in this traditional and middle-aged town. Giger has given to Gruyeres a different dimension, a wonderful attraction: two worlds completely opposed. One traditional and the other fantastic, unrealistic, on the whole: another planet. The visitor penetrates in the biomechanical, surrealistic and mind-blowing place. The museum was open since 1998. Most of its twenty rooms are reserved for Giger’s work: paintings, sculptures and furniture. His private collection is shown on the third floor artist such as Coleman, Dado, E. Fuchs, Schwarz, Steve Leuba, etc. The gallery on the 2d floor shows the temporary exhibitions of different invited artists during the year. The museum offers several possibilities to organize events such as parties, weddings, private banquets, etc. A bar completely designed by Giger built on the left hand side of the museum is the last living master piece of the artist where the atmosphere and the sensation are incomparable.

Absolutely loved this place. Doesn't take too long to see everything but I could have spent all day if I had wanted too. His work is amazingly detailed, a truly amazing eye with Dali like realism in a warped universe. His large canvases have so...More

This museum presents a fairly dystopic view of the universe. The are all is fantasy, but presents insights in to the human mind. There is not an obvious path to wander among the 3 floors, just let your imagination wander. There are paintings, drawings, sculptures...More

I must start out by saying that I am not an H.R. Giger fan. Actually, the name meant nothing to me other than that he had won an Academy Award for his designs for the original "Alien" movie. But my wife and I spent an...More

Amazing dive into the aesthetics of Alien, which I totally loved even though I am not into it. Such a huge contrast to very peaceful and pastoral views of the tiny town and fields around. Be sure to view the movie at the second floor...More

Lots of skulls and other aspects of his film work make for an unusual museum. The adjoining cafe is entirely made up of skulls and skeletons. The chairs are skeletons and skulls hang from the ceiling. This is definitely one for horror fans

Even if you know and love H. R. Giger's work in the films he took part in, this museum will blow your mind! It is absolutely mind boggling, groteske and fascinating - and all in the surroundings of the medieval village of Gruyère - totally...More

The first thing I put on my to-do list for a trip to Switzerland was a visit to the HR Giger museum. I have been a fan of his artwork for years and to see originals, in such a beautiful setting, was a must see....More

Here you are strolling along in this quaint Swiss hilltop village, and you come across what has to be the most bizarre museum in the world. Even if you are not a fan of the Alien films, I think this place is fascinating. Just be...More

the best way is to get to Bern, or Geneva! From Bern it will take 1h45min with 2 changes - in Ramont and Bulle. From Geneva it will be a longer trip - 2h30min. It's all up to You! Don't forget to have a drink at Giger's bar... More
