About

Something unusual to talk about on your return
Sep 2017 • Friends
We didn't quite know what to expect, but tourist information had the last tickets available for our last night in Lindau, so we went for it. Luckily we had German friends with us to translate the conversation afterwards, when the audience is invited backstage to talk to the artists. Magic Flute did not require much translation.
Puppets are simply amazing; their movement is more convincing than many human singers achieve in operas. The music is a specially adapted recording, so it's pieced together from multiple real performances. Very enjoyable. Oh, and as any real theater there is a bar, interval drinks that you can preorder (recommended)

Just a Look

We walked past and viewed this on a guided tour and would probably have visited a performance had time permitted, as I am told they are excellent.

If you like opera, this is a must

I saw Die Fledermaus. Whilst I love Johann Strauss, I'm not an opera fan, and this is a full-on opera in German. I do speak a little bit of the language, but I understood very little during the opera, and felt silly when the whole audience laughed at some of the dialogue and I didn't. Having said that, the puppets were amazing. Their range of movement is incredible, and I was amazed that they never got their strings tangled (which says a lot about the skill of the puppetteers). I was also quite surprised at how small they actually are - they looked considerably bigger on stage. The visit backstage was also worthwhile to see how the puppetteers operate the puppets and to get close to them (questions and answers in German.)

My seat was perfect in the second row. I wouldn't have wanted to be in the first row, which would have had my eyes at just below stage level (greater leg room, however).

It's real opera perfomed by puppets - not a Punch & Judy show.

We saw an excellent performance of the Magic Flute here. Having never been to a puppet theatre before, making an on-line booking was a bit of an act of faith as we had no idea what to expect. The theatre only holds about 100 people and we were only able to get seats near the back. We still had a perfectly good view. The movement of the puppets to pre-recorded music and dialogue (in German) is quite amazing. After the performance the look behind the scenes to see how the whole thing operates was fascinating
The only problem that there were two young children in the seats in front who were fidgeting and clearly bored. If you wouldn't take a 9 and a 6 year old child to a two hour long opera at La Scala or Covent Garden, DON'T take them to one at a puppet theatre either !

If you have the opportunity to see this "String Puppet Opera" you have to visit it. Maybe our best life-long Opera-Experience. After the Opera you will be have the opportunity to go backstage and see the wonderful artwork of the puppets and talk to the performers. THIS IS INCREDIBLE - you will love it!

Puppets do opera

This is well worth a visit. I am no opera buff but found it clever, visually pleasing and entertaining.
