By far the best way to know this charming island town is on foot. Wonder the small streets and passageways paved with cobblestone and flanked by Medieval merchant houses. The vividly colored buildings are set off beautifully by the darker timber and mahogany galleries.

You can pick up a town map from the Tourist Information Center (very welcoming and helpful) located across the entrance to the train station. The map shows all the significant landmarks. A short description of each site is also included. I found it quite useful.

The Town Hall is of course, an impressive building. Equally impressive, is the town's old library within a glass room inside, probably climate controlled. (The Liberian showed us a reproduction of an old botany book, full of drawings of plants.) There are pictures of a magnificent meeting hall on the upper level of the building. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public.

On the north side of the Town Hall, is Maximilianstrasse, Lindau's main street. It is lined by tall, gabled houses. These are now all kind of shops and restaurants. If you have the time to stay later, dinning on this street is supposed to be an experience not to miss. Alas, I had to leave.

Other points of interest include Haus zum Cavazzen (a beautiful merchant's home), St Peter's church (houses the frescoes by Hans Holbein the Elder), Thieves Tower.

In my opinion, you need 4-5 hours in Lindau to properly appreciate its charm.

Because no attraction for the island of Lindau as a whole is listed, we file this review under the old town hall.

All of Lindau Insel is indeed very attractive and well preserved but the traffic hassle required both to get onto the island and then leave it is NOT at all worth the effort. We had seen the horrific traffic jams in the warm summer months and decided to wait until winter to visit. On a Monday in December (on a day with no Christmas market either) it took us about 40 minutes to arrive on the island. What a mess!

Then we walked around the island and we said yes it's very pretty but not worth the effort, hassle, frustration and waste of time to get there. When we decided to leave, we encountered the same hassle to leave the island.

We had visted many of the other small villages on the German side of the Bodensee and we cannot understand why anyone would subject themselves to such a hassle to come to Lindau. Do yourself a favour and visit Wasserburg, Meersburg or other small town and skip Lindau.

Traffic Hell!

Wonderful city, liked it very much. exceptional architecture. We arrived by boat from Bregenz in Austria, only a short trip. Had a nice stroll from the harbour to the shopping area, taking quite a few photo,s along the way. We found a nice restaurant and had Goulash with a superb German beer for lunch, sat outside in the sunshine taking in the sights of the pedestrian area.

This is the old town hall (in German: Rathaus) of the pretty little town of Lindau, on Bodensee. It’s located in a nice, liveable old town, in which you can have nice strolls!
