We were doing a road trip in Germany and we planned 2 days for driving along the Alpenstrasse (we slept a night an hotel along the way). It has very nice views and there are a lot of lakes along the way in which you can swim. It is a great thing to do if you like driving!

There are some some "Deutsche Alpenstrasse" signs (sometimes also indicated by an Edelweiss sign) at some points but not always so be careful to look at the map which you can find on the official website.

As long as the signs are there / you can follow the route, then you have some great views / if not awesome views. But the route is not always clear, on the official site for the route it doesn't even mention what to look out for (which sign you need to follow).

Overall we follow most of the route. And saw great mountains / villages. Too bad the weather was very cloudy. But still, we saw enough, had a great drive.

On the way back from Schonau am Konigssee towards Lindau / and back towards home we saw 2 more routes we could have followed. So that's something for the next time in that area.

That the signs are not always there or even unclear makes the rating Average for me / us.

Winding road at stages with superb alpine vistas providing spectacular views into different valleys and through small villages and towns. We made part of the drive through Bavaria, but being able to do the whole drive would be superb and offer an alpine overload.

This is a beautiful road taking you through some of the most beautiful scenery and quintessential Bavarian villages southern Germany/Austria have to offer. We took several days to complete the road, wild camping as we went (there’s plenty of rest stops and small parking bays on the way). It’s simple enough to follow the signs marked the Alpenstrasse/Alpenstraße and it is sometimes marked with a little Edelweiss flower. I strongly recommend driving at least a portion of it in the afternoon/sunset as the light on the mountains and villages at that time of day is stunning.

Although we've not done the whole route, and also spread out over various days and holidays, it's definitely a road to follow with great views and spots all around. Worth to travel on!

We drove on part of this road whilst on a camping road trip in Austria and Bavaria.
Well worth the drive.
The views are stunning, stunning scenery and worth the excursion.
Now we were in a camper van so speed is never going to be too much of an issue for us, but I can imagine this would an absolutely breath-taking drive is a sporty little car - so much fun!
Don't let your vehicle put you off, it's really not an issue, it's just a lovely drive in a stunning part of the world and I for one cannot recommend this area highly enough.
Go visit, go exploring and enjoy!

This is a long road cutting across the bottom of Germany. We picked up the road at Garmisch-Partenkirchen returning to our hotel near Fussen. There is no requirement for any specific type of car, anyone can use these roads and enjoy the fantastic scenery and driving. A more powerful car can add to the driving experience due to some of the gradients, but when we drove the road there was quite a bit of traffic at points making it difficult to make use of a more powerful engine.

Will return one day to drive more of the road.
