From the mainroad in Bernkastel-Kues you can find a 2 km dirt path up to the castle and back again. There are small signposts all the way, so it’s easy to follow the path.
Take the Burgberg Rundweg counter clockwise. Then the steepest part of the dirt path will be up hill. Downhill it will be easier, don’t worry.
Entrance to the lower part of the castle is free. If you want to climb the tower you’ll have to pay.
The views from the castle over Bernkastel-Kues and surroundings are magnificent.

When traveling for wine, we also visited this castle. From here there is a wonderful view of the river Mosel and the whole Bernkasel. You can also diversify this view with good food. We had something smaller and lighter. Both dishes were good and we can recommend. Due to the larger number of people, the staff was a bit stuck, but they could also understand.

View was amazing, restaurant at this castle was well designed, food & service were very good. There are multiple ways to get there, do your navigational & parking homework else you will have a long walk down and even “longer” walk back! Worth the effort.

Pretty well signposted from the main square of B-K. It's an uphill but reasonably straightforward walk to reach the old fortress - didn't take long. Great views from the top! Would recommend if you're visiting B-K

Stunning view over the Mosel-Valley and the city Bernkastel-Kues. A nice walk through the vineyards with a steep ascent over steps and a cobblestone-path. Don't underestimate the uphill climb. But worth to experience the prospect throughout every single step.

We caught the yellow truck on the riverbank which provides a ride up the bumpy dirt track to the castle. €7 return. The castle is a shell with an adjoining shop and restaurant. But the views of the valley below, in both directions, are spectacular. The walk down to the town is hard on the legs but the views keep giving, all the way down.

We caught the little yellow bus up to the castle which was good value for €7 (or €6 with you visitor discount card) for the round trip. Stop for lunch or coffee in Schutzenhaus Beer garden and restaurant. Excellent menu and reasonable prices. Loved the salmon, leek and sour cream pizza. Very good coffee too. Very relaxing atmosphere and really good and efficient service.

Some of our group climbed up and some took the bus (return $7 euro). The castle is a ruin that is interesting to walk around. The views of the town and surrounding countryside are wonderful. We stopped at the restaurant for a drink. The local wines recommended were very good. The memory of drinking wine while enjoying the view will stay with us a long time

Wonderful castle ruins on top of Bernkastle-Kues. Fantastic views at top and great facilities, cafe/toilets. Quite steep walking up from town (I think there is a bus from town if you require assistance). Certainly recommended a visit if only for the view at the top!

Yes, but you can climb up to see the view. Besides, there's nothing really exciting to see inside. They have a restaurant in the summer but the food is crappy. Well, it's nice to stop for a glass of wine after the hike up.
