Must visit castle
Sep 2020
Excellent presentation, well maintained, great views. The route through the castle is well planned especially because of social distancing requirements. Probably our best castle visit in the Southern Pfalz.

Hardenburg Ruin
Oct 2018
Awesome! Lots of information and exploring for the entire family. My kids loved exploring this massive ruin! Not pet friendly. There is a small fee to enter.

Best castle in Rhineland Palatinate
Jun 2018 • Solo
On one of the information panels at the castle it is written that this castle is one of the most imposing castles in Rhineland Palatinate. I can only agree. Surprisingly I was the only visitor on Saturday afternoon which was a big advantage - I could explore it undisturbed and take plenty of pictures without having foreign people on them.
There are several trails to get there from Bad Durkheim - Hardenburg where you can find a few free parking lots for castle visitors. Unfortunately the trails closest to the parking I chose were closed due to damages caused by recent floods which was in the end a prize because it made me to enter the village and discover its beautiful old buildings and interact with their nice residents.
Entrance to the castle is 4,50 EUR and there are no limits where you can or can't go. In one of the towers where the cash desk is located you will find a little museum with information about the castle history. Ruins are even bigger than they look like from the road and it took me about 2 hours to see its several floors, towers and even the garden and fortification.

Impressive

I knew nothing about this castle until we visited randomly on a Thursday. The audio guide (2euro extra) had good information but hard to follow their interactive map. The entrance was newly designed and nicely displayed artifacts. We spent about 1 and 1/2 hours here walking around and exploring the castle. It's pretty large and a fun family activity.

Very disappointed

Our visit was the shortest one possible, because unfortunately it was closed on Friday, even if I did not find anywhere mentioned that it will be closed during the week. If this happen to you, you can try to salvage your trip by taking the trail behind the castle to the Monastery in Limburg. It is a leisure walk with beautiful landscapes.

A very comprehensive self guided audio tour of one of the largest castle ruins in the area. Well worth a visit, easy to spend a half day here, great spot for a picnic.

The ruins are easily accessible and we were well received in the reception. The view is amazing and you can have access to all the places inside the ruins.

Reaching Back in Time
Nov 2016 • Couples
Although this is a castle ruin it is a great place to explore, but be prepared for a 15 minute walk up a fairly steep hill. The entrance fee was inexpensive and once inside you'll find various artifacts, such as the hilt of a sword, coins, pottery, etc. We entered through a doorway and viewed a cavernous area that showed how high the walls actually were. The scenery from the lookout points was beautiful and the fall colors made it more enjoyable. Walking on the grounds made me imagine how this 13th century castle might have been a mighty fortress in it's day.

Take your time and detour to see this beautiful castle - so well maintained, with a fantastic self-guided tour that we did around all the buildings. If only all tourist sites can be like this!

Great 12th Century Castle
Jul 2016 • Couples
Just west of the famous Deutsch wine street, this castle is a great way to spend a couple hours on a nice day. Park at the hotel and guest house and walk up. There is a new museum, helpful English speaking staff, and literature about the history and map are also available in English. The grounds are extensive and the views are great. 450 Euro per adult is worth it.
