I love this town. The whole area is charming, and the city does not shy away from its claim to fame. Visit the Pied Piper statue, watch the whole story play out on a little wheel, take a Pied Piper tour down to the river, and shop for adorable (not gross or creepy) rat merchadise around every corner. The historic buildings are beautiful.

It is a crime not to go to Hamelin, of legendary Pied Pier fame and not see the statue. Drift round the pretty town of high gabled house and lunch in one of the lovely cafe's. The town is surrounded by lovely scenery of Lower Saxony

Visited with a coach load of family and friends for a tour of the city. Very pretty and historic with the inlet brass rats in the stone cobbles. Most of the family/friends paid for the pied piper tour which was considered to be absolutely brilliant for 5E, very entertaining for young and old alike.
Some of the party sat and people watched from a cafe in the square.
Well worth a visit

The town is as charming as you would expect it to be. The walk by the river is a very relaxing way to see the town. The shops provide a fabulous selection of items from handcrafted to fabulous tea cups. The buildings throughout the town are not only charming but exactly what you were hoping to see in Germany. Enjoy your Frühstück (breakfast). It is deliciously different from what you will get in America. Each time I have visited Germany, that is the meal I appreciate most. Be adventurous and sample as many different foods as you can. Stay in a pension and have a tasty Frühstück.

I am not a great lover of statues but you would expect there to be at least one statue of the pied piper in this town and there is, two in fact, worth a look but not mind blowing.

There are two bronze statues in Hameln of the famous 'Pied Piper'.
The one I think this listing refers to is the one of the Pied Piper and the children of Hameln which is in a plaza off to the side of Kastanienwall Strasse to the east of the old city next to the Rathaus (Town Hall).
The other is in the old town at the eastern end of the Ostersrasse and is a statue of just The Pied Piper himself... I actually prefer this one, (See photos) but worth seeing them both as within a 5 minute walk of each other.

This place was a REST STOP for my 5 month tour and we were here for about 4 days. It was hectic before stopping here and I must say before I realized what place this was.....IT WAS PEACEFUL......it was the most peaceful place I have EVER experience during a turbulent time during our tour....this place is AWESOME....food was great also.....

The figure seemed to be playing an instrument similar to the oboe, so as an oboist it particularly appealed to me

The statue of the Pied Piper was somewhat interesting but nothing extraordinary as far as I was concerned. I was dismayed to see that someone had put stickers on the statue so it seemed somewhat defaced or disrespected. I was expecting something much grander, I guess, and while I thought it was nice, by itself it wasn't anything particularly special.
However, the location of the statue, in the center of Old Town, did add to the experience somewhat but that was mostly negated by the constant flood of people walking by it. I'm glad I visited Old Town Hameln but didn't think the statue was that great.

Very disappointed, no water in the pond and the gardens all around full of weeds. It was the one next to the Town Hall (aptly called the Rathaus).

When as a child I lived in Hameln, late 1940's we visited a cave and there were sculptures of the Pied Piper and children and rats. Does this still exist?
