If you are in the area, take the time to experience Plassenburg Castle. It may have the prettiest inner courtyard I've yet to see and the charming gift shop has an interesting history of the castle and the multitude of families that have held it...More

I grew up not too far from Kulmbach and read several books about the Plassenburg, so it was finally time to take a look. It was extremely confusing to find out how to get to the castle. We drove all the way up to the...More

We specifically drove to Kulmbach to visit this castle. It is not wow, but we enjoyed the visit. The guided tours are only in German. There is a little coffee shop where you can enjoy something to drink. The view is beautiful. We took a...More

This is a beautiful castle with magnificent views out over the town of Kulmbach. In the time we were visiting we saw two other pairs of people! The fee for entry to everything is very reasonable - only 7 euro for an adult, kids to...More

Visited Plassenburg in mid-September. Very important attraction and piece of Kulmbach history. As suggested by other commenters, we took the shuttle bus up to the castle grounds and return. Exploring the castle history in English can be done using the audio guide while venturing through...More

As many have mentioned, you can walk up the hill, but I would take the bus. €2.60 for the bus fare for the return journey down to the town centre. There were works going on in the town centre and we had trouble finding the...More

The German Pewter Figure Museum is displayed over four floors of a wing of Plassenburg Castle. We spent an hour, almost alone, viewing the many displays. We could have spent very much longer there but our interest was centred around the Battle of Waterloo era...More

Definitely a heck of a walk (if you don't take the bus up). There are a handful of spots to park about halfway up the hill (where we lucked out and found a spot). It is a strenuous walk to the top. The views are...More

Wurzburg or Bamberg Germany (4 Replies)
We will be using one of these cities as a hub to venture out from (by train or car, not sure yet) and was wondering which is the better and more quaint city to do so. Will possibly be visiting Coburg (Castle), Bayreuth (New Palace), Kulmbach (Plassenburg Castle), Nuremberg (Imperial Castle, etc) and possibly Ansbach. We like historic old towns, castles, historic buildings and nice hotels.

Other option is to split time and stay in both cities but don't want to carry luggage all over the place unless it is worthwhile.

Bamberg to Bayreuth and Kulmbach (7 Replies)
I want to base a 3 day-3 night stay in Bamberg. I would like to spend two days in Bambuerg and on the third day drive to Kulmbach to visit the Plassenburg castle for a couple of hours, then drive to Bayreuth to visit: botanical garden, Old Castle Eremitage, the New Castle and the Opera House. Is it possible to see everything I want on the third day or should I eliminate Plassenburg and spend the entire day in Bayreuth? thanks for your help, R.

You'll spend about 2 hours on the road for the complete trip, probably a fair amount less if you floor it on the highway. If you start not too late you should have enough time for both places.
