The building was modeled on a typical rich home in the days before the city of Pompeii was covered in lava. To visit this building is just a pleasant surprise in the middle of Germany.

Along the Main River in Aschauffenburg, Germany there is a beautiful walking path that leads from the Aschaffenburg Castle to the Pompejanum, an idealized replica of a Roman villa. Built by King Ludwig I the building houses Roman antiquities and provides visitors with a life-size realization of Roman living. More interesting for its builder’s interest in Roman architecture than as a true relic of the past, it is still worth a visit in a town that has risen like a Phoenix after being badly damaged in WWII.

This is an interesting museum with beautiful views of the river. All exhibits are in German which limits the visitor enjoyment of others. The Roman artifacts are well displayed.

It was interesting to view Pompeii, Roman artifacts in Germany. There are multiple rooms which house a variety of coins, pottery, sculptures, clothing etc from Italy. All of the comments are in German so difficult to read if you don't speak German but still worth the trip.

The building in the middle of the garden is kind of museum (?). You need to pay to get inside and no photography.Took some pictures from outside. We visited the garden only and enjoyed the view of the Main. There are some beautiful Art Nouveau houses in front of the garden

This is the world´s only replica of a Roman villa in Pompeii, which was built at the behest of King Ludwig I. The architect Friedrich von Gärtner succeeded in creating an ideal afterimage to study ancient culture through magnificent decoration and interior design. Inside you will find a lot of sculptures, utensils and ornamental ceramics from Roman times. There is currently a special exhibition of creations of ancient costumes.

The Pompejanum is a replica villa from the Roman city of Pompeii. Built by the Mad King Ludwig.

Interesting little museum. FYI all the info boards are in German...no English and unless you have your interpreter with you, you will be out of luck. Pictures are not allowed in this building, and is similar in most of Germany's top sites. Just enjoy the moment. Great wall murals and interesting open inner courtyard with columns. Roman artifacts grace the rooms and mosaic floors are recreated. Damaged during WW2 but restored to it's past beauty. Sounding pretty good now!

Lovely location on the Main River. Beautiful gardens right next door. Views of the River and the Johannisburg Castle/Palace.

So, since my last visit in winter (when I stood in front of a closed door), I had the opportunity to visit the inside part of that building. First room, first impression: Back 2000 years ago, in Italy. Already the first room makes such an impression, that you get directly transported out of Germany, the whole building has nice descriptions, although all in German.... BUT you can get it in english at the tourism office that stands in front of the castle not far from there (10mins walking). If you ever come in Aschaffenburg, don't miss that!

There were many collections and the museum is well maintained. But all explanations were only in German and hence found it difficult to appreciate. We had bought a common ticket. The exterior and surroundings is amazing and picturesque.
