A must if you like copperplate-engravings

The Burghofmuseum is housed in an attractive manor house dating from the mid-sixteenth century. When we visited, in April, it was partly hidden by a splendid blooming tree. As the entrance fee was only 2 euros, we thought it would be a pity not to enter. The exhibits cover a wide array of domains of the history of Soest from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Instructive, but nothing memorable. We were rather disappointed there was no information on the 20th century. We had a quick look at the stucco reliefs in the Knights’ Hall, which is used for weddings and other celebrations, but spent most of our time on the large collection of copperplate-engravings by one of the leading exponents of the technique, Soest-born Heinrich Aldegrever (1502-1555/61). There was a whole cabinet with drawers we could pull out ourselves to examine the sometimes minute engravings through a magnifying glass.

From the museum we had access to the two-storeys medieval tower house (c. 1200), the so-called Romanesque House, located behind the manor. As dwellings were made out of wood in the Middle Ages, it must have belonged to very rich people. We climbed the stairs to the attic, but, apart from some faded wall paintings, there isn’t much to be seen. The vaulting and supporting column on the ground-floor and the fireplace are later additions. Still it was nice to get a feel of the place. People with mobility issues should be aware the house has no elevator.
