We visited in very poor weather and also taking into account the cost of a journey on the steam train decided to spend some time at Wernigerode Station instead of a journey. It was well worthwhile. You can access the platform, shunting yards and turntable with no problem. You can even get into the carriages and access the elevated viewing area. We saw steam and diesel engines and 2 trains depart. It is important to try and time your visit 20 minutes or so before departure as there can be 2 hour gaps between trains but they prepare the engines sometimes an hour ahead.

I cannot understand the reviewers who complain about the price. Don't they check beforehand? As for the reviewer who said it's possible to travel across the whole country in an Intercity Express for less, it's hardly the same experience and therefore not a fair comparison.
We spent 3 nights in Wernigerode between visiting friends in Bavaria and others in Niedersachsen and I chose it specifically because of the steam train up the Brocken. It was mid-week so not crowded and we were lucky that it was a clear sunny day with no wind at the top and therefore not as cold as we'd thought. As recommended by the landlady at our B&B we sat as far back as possible and on the left for the best views of the scenery and of the steam engine.
We'd intended to go back down after a quick mug of tea (now apparently 'Pott' in German rather than 'Becher') but the museum was so fascinating that we stayed for a couple of hours. Even my husband, who can't read German, found plenty of interest.
It's well laid out and there's quite a bit of interactive stuff to keep children of all ages happy. The museum and restaurant staff were very pleasant and prices very reasonable.
We may even go back again next year when we plan to return to visit Harz towns other than Wernigerode and to travel on the rest of the Harz railway.

I keep coming back.
This has to be one of the best experiences anywhere in the world for people who love trains. Its more than just the best way to get to the Brocken - which is an excellent journey by the way. Its a total experience of how a steam railway runs, with an easily accessible engine shed, maintenance area just off the main station in Wernigeorde. Even people who don't love trains will be interested in the sight of a few simmering engines at the end of the day getting prepared for their next day's work.
The railway is quite magnificent to see, and a trip to Drei Annen Hohne at the right time will see three steam trains in the platforms, heading to different destinations - not something you expect to see in the 21st century.
If you have time, its a great way to see the Harz mountains beyond the Brocken.

The reason for visited the area was to visit the railway. Unfortunately during our visit the weather meant the network was closed for the last day of our visit. However this is a must visit the steam engines are powerful and glide up the mountain with ease. The scenery is stunning. We made it up too the Brocken and visited the visitor centre which is well worth a brief visit to get a taste for the history of the area. My only observation would be its all in German which meant we couldn't fully absorb all of the exhibits.

Well worth investing on the three day tickets if you are in the ares for a few days as it will give you the chance to fully explore the railway.

Extensive network of meter gauge railways within the area with 3 interconnected lines. However it is difficult to achive a complete circuit as the connection times are sometimes guite long. Most trains are steam hauled, but some are diesel railcars. The most popular route is to the top of the Brocken Mountain which winds through trees and past several villages while offering goods views of the countryside.

The headquarters of the HSB ( Harzer Schmalspurbahnen) is in Wernigerode and provides steam train trips to the Brocken, Eisfelder Talmuhle and Drei Annen Hohne.

Fabulous to travel on these trains - although the day we travelled to the Brocken the trains were very full.

A great way to travel as in by gone era.

Highly Recommended

Despite it being extremely cold that day the train was very warm and comfortable. The scenery was amazing and the snow was beautiful and made for great photos, as we made our way to the top. The view from the top was well worth the trip.
