A amazing journey up to the Brocken. The journey was worth the cost for a extra special experience. The ticket office opened at 8:30 and the first train was 8:55AM. To avoid the crowds we took the first train and left the mountain at around 1PM. Take a jacket as the mountain can be chilly. There is a nice circular walk and some small eateries. To get the best view sit in the back left hand side on the way up.

I keep coming back.
This has to be one of the best experiences anywhere in the world for people who love trains. Its more than just the best way to get to the Brocken - which is an excellent journey by the way. Its a total experience of how a steam railway runs, with an easily accessible engine shed, maintenance area just off the main station in Wernigeorde. Even people who don't love trains will be interested in the sight of a few simmering engines at the end of the day getting prepared for their next day's work.
The railway is quite magnificent to see, and a trip to Drei Annen Hohne at the right time will see three steam trains in the platforms, heading to different destinations - not something you expect to see in the 21st century.
If you have time, its a great way to see the Harz mountains beyond the Brocken.

Lovely experience in fine weather.
Please take the entire train trip from Wenigerode as the price is the same.
Search to sit on the left side of the train.
Broken itself is not a specilet, but you can walk around and look out over the landscape all the way around.
Do not take the trip in bad weather.
We went down 16 km to Bad Harzburg, a very special experience to pass the dam, which has shared BRD and DDR.

Extensive network of meter gauge railways within the area with 3 interconnected lines. However it is difficult to achive a complete circuit as the connection times are sometimes guite long. Most trains are steam hauled, but some are diesel railcars. The most popular route is to the top of the Brocken Mountain which winds through trees and past several villages while offering goods views of the countryside.

The headquarters of the HSB ( Harzer Schmalspurbahnen) is in Wernigerode and provides steam train trips to the Brocken, Eisfelder Talmuhle and Drei Annen Hohne.
Fabulous to travel on these trains - although the day we travelled to the Brocken the trains were very full.
A great way to travel as in by gone era.
Highly Recommended

really nice scenery going up the brocken, and great steam locomotive too. interesting ride. We saw the effect of climate change with the spruce beetle causing devastation which was sad, but though provoking.

Despite it being extremely cold that day the train was very warm and comfortable. The scenery was amazing and the snow was beautiful and made for great photos, as we made our way to the top. The view from the top was well worth the trip.

Since we spent an extended weekend in Wernigerode, it was clear that we also wanted to go to the chunks!
First at the station on the platform to observe the events - there was also information about different locomotives!
It was a beautiful ride through a landscape that was unfortunately also characterized by tree death.
On the way we could also buy liqueurs to toast our first hunk ride!
The train was not too crowded, there were seats for everyone, although we left on a Sunday.
The price for travelling with an old steam locomotive reasonable (maintenance, coal, staff), if it also seems a bit high at first glance.
We were traveling without children, however, it might be necessary to reconsider whether some kind of family card would be an idea, as for families with children such a ride would be rather difficult to afford.

Expensive experience, but very nice
Days/Places sometimes overcrowded because of weekends or public holidays
Interesting announcements regarding the mountains and landscape
