I travelled to the Eder dam whilst staying in Kassel. I took bus 500 (quite early in the morning, from in front of the station plaza in Kassel) to Bad WIldungen http://www.nvv.de/fileadmin/nvv/download/fahrplaene/500.pdf which cost around 12 euros or so (approx. price as of Oct 2013), the trip was almost 2 hours... then waited at the train station for bus 510, which I took as far as Waldeck Bergbahn, for about 6 euros. The journey through the hills in the morning mist was rather atmospheric.
Don't get off at the dam wall as youll miss a great opportunity to view the dam and reservoir from Waldeck castle. The Bergbahn is about 2km beyond the dam wall, which you pass on the way there. Although the bus continues up to Waldeck and into the hills, you can ride the Bergbahn up to Waldeck and then walk up to the castle, about 10 minutes from the Bergbahn. The view over the lake is stunning on a clear day. On returning to the lake side, follow the signs for the pier, about 2-300 yards or so from the turn to Waldeck, further along the shore. http://www.personenschiffahrt-edersee.de/ the boat runs to and from the dam wall, and further up the reservoir, and a round trip takes around 2-3 hours, depending on which leg you choose. You can disembark at the dam wall itself, though the lift up to the top of the dam, to walk across it, costs about another euro.
There is a museum dedicated to the wartime events, which is about a 30 minute walk from the dam, though many of the exhibits and films are in German. http://www.dambusters.de/ the museum itself is quite small and covers a range of topics from the dams raid, to bombing raids on Kassel and further afield. As interesting as the museum was, the lack of focus left me in two minds about whether it was worth the hike from the dam.
On returning to the dam, you can take the 510 bus back from the dam wall to Bad WIldungen station, where you can either take the bus back to Kassel, or take the train from the station.
The trip took the best part of a day, but was rather enjoyable. I would rate this day trip slightly better than the day trip to the Mohne dam near Soest.

We have been at the Edersee three or four times now in total.
Last trip was on Eastern 2014 with our two kids (2 and 5) and a friend. Even if it was crowded regarding cars and parking space it was a great day: We rent an e-boat for one hour, very relaxing. After that we checked the playground facilities at Strandbad Waldeck:Great and enough sitting facilities for making a pick-nick. After that we took the old - or ancient :-) - Bergbahn going up to Schloss Waldeck. That was so funny, such little cabins. My husband assume that the windows of the of the small cabins of 1961 must be the windows of the former VW Käfer. (4 EUR for a return ticket per adult)
Finally we enjoyed the amazing, absolutely amazing view from the platform from Schloss Waldeck (free entrance). We saw that spot the evening before in the German movie "The Schlussmacher" of Matthias Schweighöfer. In the Schloss yard was a kind of snack bar. It was okay and offered cake and sausages with chips.
And then: Down it goes again with the VW Käfer cabins :-)
Finally we stopped at the "Sperrmauer, what a great construction. It offers a museum in the wall, we visited last time. Very interesting.
On a flyer we saw that there are a lot of other sites and facilities which can be enjoyed at the Edersee region. Thus, we will be back for sure.

I visited in the early afternoon, and parked in the cheap car park. I could hear the laughter of children playing in the facilities on the other side of the dam quite clearly - they sounded like they were having a fantastic time. A group on segways trundled past and several cyclists followed. The range of things to do was large. I walked over the dam, but the museum had been moved to a more distant location, so I didn't see that. There were a number of outlets for food and some pleasant gardens.

Lake Edersee is formed behind the dam built to facilitate water transportation. Long, very long trail of backwaters gives excellent opportunities for sailing, boating, travelling on cruise boats. The road from nearby towns is winding along green forests and in peak of German summer, it is really very beautiful and scenic. No wonder many local and tourists make the most of it driving or riding motorcycles.
Along the way, there are several small jetties where numerous sailing boats are berthed for occasional rides by the owners. There are many restaurants on the way to the dam and on the other side as well. Some of them provide excellent atmosphere on the waterfront.
Tourist area near dam has a small exhibition and would host centenary celebrations in August 2014.
This could also be an excellent option for family vacation with kids. Cycling along the lakefront, rowing, boating or cruise are many options to spend time in scenic surroundings which also has other tourist attractions,

Edersse was the highlight on a 5 day bicycle trip. The scenery (specially on southside) is great and it was good fun. Great nature. Plenty of places for food (basicly fast food) and drinks. Very safe - we just stopped and had a swim in the lake. Friendly people around. We will come back.

Edersee is a huge reservoir created by the 48m high Edersee Dam. Along large sections of its perimeter runs a road accompanied by wide pavement for walkers.
On the eastern side walkers can cross the spectacular dam and explore the interior of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, a UNESCO Word Heritage Site. There are plenty of facilities along the route with fabulous views from many hills dotted all over.
Note there are no passable roads in the interior and beyond Bringhausen,
Get a map from your hotel or a tourist centre and follow one of the many marked trails.

We visited the Mohne & Eder dams as part of an organised tour. These 2 Dams together with the Sorpe dam were breached in 1943 in a famous bombing exercise known as the "Dambusters".
These dams have been somewhat commercialed and have become a must visit tourist site.

worth a walk over the Dam to see the view from both sides. Would also recommend a boot trip on the Edersee

It was quite an exiting experience to walk that high (30m max.) above ground through a forest. Also nice to learn about animals living in the trees. But 8,50€ per adult is a little bit too much for a 250m walk. Dogs and Baby Buggies are allowed.

Hallo,

Are there cabs and buses in Waldeck? Trying not to rent a car on our trip.
Written July 21, 2016
Not that we were aware of. We had a car so sorry I can't help. However I did notice a bus stop at the bottom of the hill winding up to the castle, so there must be transport?

Hi,
Planning trip in June 2015. Are there any boat cruises such as Viking having access to Waldeck? Best travel from Savannah,GA. USA?
Any local contacts to research my Grandfathers family in Waldeck? Thank You. Daniel Hofmann SR.
