An unexpected delight

When returning from La Madonna d'Utelle, we stopped and visited the town of Utelle.
It has a beautiful square and a plain looking church. But when entering the church, you'll be amazed!
It's definitely worth a detour as well.

Plain outside, but Wow within

We visited the tiny and remote town of Utelle on a friend's recommendation, and found it, like many small hilltop villages, in a prolonged death throe. "A vendre" ("For sale") signs in many of the houses, shuttered businesses and populated mostly with the elderly. A rather sad nostalgia hangs over these places that depresses me, no matter how "picturesque" the place is. And Utelle is indeed picturesque - although only about 25 miles from Nice, it seems to hang in the sky, alone and undisturbed. The church of St. Veran, in the middle of the town and named after a 6th century Bishop of Cavaillon who chased away dragons, is quite remarkable. The plain Romanesque exterior conceals an exuberant, almost Rococco, interior, and the huge rentable behind the altar is spectacular. It's worth the trip up, but take the very twisty road slowly!
