Even if it's not the most picturesque place in the country, it is worth to walk around the old town. I recommend, as long as it is possible, during the Christmas market period.

Extensive old town with many very well presented historic builings particularly in and around the market square. Pedestrianised area so very pleasant for walking with a variety of shops and restaurants.

Actually we visited Memmingen in the morning just to kill some time before our afternoon flight, but were positively surprised. Maybe not the whole old town is impressive, but generally it's well preserved and interesting. City walls, gates, some nice churches, town hall, tax house and some other old buildings around the town. The city's website provides downloadable pdf maps of the city and leaflets with red and green route leading around the old town sites. Worth visiting if you're around.…

The church is the main attraction, and is of great importance to German history. Also has a fine organ. The museum is over the road and free to visit. Terrible paintings but a great collection of old dolls houses. Also a small but well reached account of the Jewish population of Memling and what happened to them in the war. One lady ended up living in Bradford and became a much loved nurse in a children's hospital. Most were murdered but several emigrated to Israel …
