As the Market place is really in the middle of town it is a busy place with shops, bakeries and places to eat. I crossed through here quite a few times and every time there was something new to notice. Of course you can see the Cathedral and other buildings but try and find the extra things that make it interesting.
The stone pump in front of the Gothic house stems from the year 1736.
In front of the passage towards the cathedral is the Norbert Fountain situated. The saint, on a high pillar, keeps watch over the marketplace.
The surviving bay window made of ashlar
Situated opposite the town hall is an octagonal pavilion with decorative gable from the 18th century.
Nice shopping around the market place as well

Lovely place to visit during Summer/Fall.
The sunset seen from any of the cafes around the marketplace is lovely.
You can also admire ; Protestant Church, Market Pump, Norbert's Fountain, Michael's Chapel and St. Viktor's Cathedral.
A relaxing location.

This little market place is very beautiful. When we visited in the summer of 2018, there was even a stage being set up for a music festival. We were not able to stay for it but I am sure the atmosphere would have been excellent. Plenty of eating and drinking establishments.

A nice small market place in the historic centre of Xanten. Lots of cafés, restaurants and bakeries around this place.

Every December there is a small Christmas market where you can have one of the traditional German treats like Gluhwein and Reibekuchen (fried potato fritters)

At nearby tourist office you can by a ticket for a guided evening tour (starting 18:00) by the Nightwatch with lanterns that will take you around the square and the nearby St. Viktor church.

Pleasant ambiance of terraces, cafés, restaurants and bakeries. Very many Germans having coffee with 'Kuchen' on a historic city square. People are friendly and respectful, also when they are in a group.

Xanten is 38 km from Terborg, the nearest railway station in the Netherlands where bicycles can be rented. A nice loop is Terborg - Wesel - Xanten - Rees - Netterden - Terborg 106 km through the Rhine valley. It took me just over 7 hours (including visits to several sites). OV rent bikes do not have gears, but it turned out not to be a problem as the whole route is more or less flat.

We visited this little market square with Chinese family members. Our aim was to show them the German hospitality and cosiness of this little town with Roman history. The market square is surrounded with a number of bakery/pastry shops and terraces as well as ice cream saloons and restaurants. From the north and east side of the square you have a good view to the beautiful Gothic Cathedral which is the largest Cathedral north of Cologne. Starting from this market square there are a number of small cosy shopping streets with a variety of shops. Not far from the market square there is the Roman open air museum and a well maintained beautiful grain mill. All worthwhile to visit and good for an interesting and cosy day meanwhile enjoying tasty good quality food and drinks from time to time.

If you're looking for a tourist-free zone, Xanten is the place for you. I never would have known it existed if it weren't for the fact that I was staying with my German friend and her family. The only people there (which is not a large number) were locals.

Unfortunately it was not market day, which I have heard is very attractive. I would also like to go back around Christmas time as they have a charming Christmas Market.

Just west of the Ruhrgebiet, Xanten is a good place to be. The market place offer a nice view and, in the better seasons, good terraces for a drink or a dish.
