Architectural highlight
Apr 2019 • Couples
If you want to see how a landscape can be created from concrete and creates such a wonderful sense of spirituality then this is a must see.

As a contemporary church should look like
Aug 2018 • Couples
Coming closer to the building is a going to an enigma. What will I see upon arrival. As a brutal smash in the face is your entering of the church. You would think it will be a dark concrete hole, the contrary is true. It is a play of dark concrete and light in the different angles and corners of the church. It is century-old devotion wrapped in a big, big contemporay building the gives you in the same time a mission in life.
Try to visit around mass hours, than you will be able to visit the different levels of the podiums at the right as well. Definitely worth a serious detour when in a 1 hour range around.

Great architecture from Böhm
May 2018 • Family
Teenager: not so good.

Steve: great brutalism with wonderful windows and surrounding buildings. Another great Böhm building in the area. Not only the church but also village and environment are very nice.

You have to see it to believe it!

We had no idea about the Marien Dom cathedral when we visited Velbert-Neviges for a walk around the pilgrim path. It certainly dominates the town and surrounding countryside. It is of great architectural interest but I would certainly not say that it is pleasing on the eye. Concrete is not really the right material to enhance the hilly wooded area. It was closed for rennovation when we were there so we did not have the opportunity to go inside.

Brutalist, somber, unapproachable
Mar 2016 • Couples
This catholic church has little in common with the average catholic church. It is very dark inside, the few stained glas Windows and the Windows high up in the ceiling are not meant to shine light inside. Here the visitor is on his own and there is no place of comfort nor to hide. When in the area definitely worth a visit. Is the building beautiful or harmonious? These seem to be the wrong concepts to described this building. The impression is powerful both from the outside and the inside.

Looks bad from the outside but gets better
Jun 2015 • Family
Really surprising you expect concrete buildings in the East but this while not impressive on the outside just gets better and better - worth a look if your in the area but not worth a special trip.

Love it or hate it!

Very few modern buildings constructed out of concrete wear well, and this is no exception! Outside it seems to resemble a relic of the Ruhr's industrial past, a chunk of grey stained concrete reminiscent of coal bunker! But go into the gloom of the interior and you are in a giant cavern punctuated by some wonderful coloured glass windows: mainly red, with the Rose motif.

Great modern cathedral
The Mariendom in Velbert Neviges is a great modern cathedral which was built from 1966 - 1968. I am looking forward attending a concert during the next trip as it is said that the sound is marvelous. The old town around and the Schloss Hardenberg which are in walking distance are definitely worthwhile to be explored.

A Peaceful Pilgrimage Church in Germany
Oct 2013 • Couples
The Marien Dom, or Cathedral of St. Mary's, in Velbert Neviges is an unusual church which was finished in the 1970's. The stained glass is red roses, which are beautiful and the church is peaceful and quiet -- a nice place to spend reflective time in prayer.
