About

We had a wonderful guide who told us all about ski jumping, ski flying and the hill of course. It was much more interesting than I had expected. And the view was amazing.

The Heini-Kolpfer Ski Flying Hill is one of five in the world and the only one located in Germany. There is no word in the English dictionary for the German word “Schanze”, that is why it is simply called “jumping hill” or in this case "ski flying hill".
This ski flying hill can be visited all year round and closes only a few days per year due to a technical inspection or during a sport event. It should not be confused with another venue in Oberstdorf, the “Schattenberg Ski Jumping Hill”, located near the town centre.
When approaching Oberstdorf, follow the signs that say “Heini Klopfer Skifluschanze” to avoid the town centre. Due to a construction site on the way and the subsequent detour, we accidentally passed the famous Loretto chapels and stopped for a quick visit.
After parking our car near the ski hill we started a trekking tour by visiting the top of the hill. Our destination for the day was the small hamlet “Einödsbach”, some 2¼ hours away.
The hill tower is an amazing cantilevered construction, meaning it has no column under its top part. It is protruding from the treetops of the surrounding forest and can be seen from many kilometres away. It is clearly visible from the walkway shortly before Einödsbach.
The entire sports facility has been revised prior to the Ski Flying World Championships that took place in January 2018. It may look different now from the last time you saw it. The outside of the tower is now cladded with red panels and matches the Oberstdorf logo.
To reach the top you have to take two separate elevators that are better described as funiculars or inclined lifts (“Standseilbahn” in German). The view from the observation deck is stunning. There is the Lake Freiberg (Freibergsee) right in front of you. And then there are great views into the Stillach valley (Stillachtal) and its surrounding mountain peaks.
One elevator ride down, at the exit of the middle station – next the coffee bar – is the point where many trekking opportunities start. You can hike around Lake Freiberg (Freibergsee), or take the easy walk to the Fellhorn cable car in less than an hour and then continue to Einödsbach via Birgsau.
The toilets near the ticket booth are for free (as it should be). At the middle station a short video presentation shows a little bit of the construction of the hill and beautiful black and white photos from the first ski flying event in 1950.
Heini Klopfer was a ski jumping athlete and architect. He designed not only the first ski jumping hill in Oberstdorf in 1950, but was involved in the design and construction of more than 200 ski jumping hills around the world.
Note that there is a very convenient public bus line running up and down the Stillach valley between Oberstdorf centre and Birgsau, near Einödsbach. It has a stop near the Heini Klopfer Ski Flying Hill.

We took an unplanned stop here and got tickets to go inside the ski jump area and take a trip up to the top. It was very interesting and I was impressed with the quality of the facility and how clean it was. After walking through the stands - which if you look down you can see the river etc.. you reach a lift to get up higher, after that there is another lift - we struggled to open the door to get onto the top though, even the man who was with us but not part of our group could not open the door which was worrying as the weather was very hot. We managed to get it open and the views were amazing. I loved the telescope and spent a lot of time zooming in on areas you cannot see closely. I also loved that you could hear the cow bells from the cows who were on the field so loudly and clearly. It was very quiet and peaceful.

There is a huge renovation project going on here, so the area around the tower is fenced off. Meaning that one sees only a part of the tower and nothing else. Not so nice.

There is a beautiful view at the top! Loved getting to hear the bells on the cows in the pasture below. I wish we would have had more time to hike around a bit. The fee was a bit much but hey it was vacation. We ate lunch at the restaurant at the base and love it. The prices were great and so was the food. An hour to the top and back is more than enough time unless you want to walk around at the base.

Visited this restaurant during our week long visit in Bavaria. After using the ski lift to travel to the top of the ski jump we had a welcome coffee and the best kaiserschmaren we tasted all week. Absolutely delicious.

This may be the older of the ski-jumps but is still very impressive. we took the easy way up i.e. using the chair lift. Entry fees were reasonable and the car park free with the Allgau guest card.

The view is nice and looking down into the ski-jump arena is breath taking. Fee for the ride to the top seems to be a little high though.
