A day at la Maison de nos Aieux was a magical experience as I learned so much about my ancestors and the land they cultivated back to the 1600s. Became a member of the Foundation and plan to follow and support them in the future. I will return to this site any chance I get! The historic building and exhibits, church de Ste. Famille and cemetery are beautiful as are the picturesque grounds facing la Riviere St. Laurent. Seeing many ancestral names from within my own tree on the stunning outdoor sculpture was very moving and memorable. Special kudos to Lelia Dekker and Sabrina Gamache-Mercurio for their incredible assistance on this genealogy journey. The bookstore/gift shop is also sweet and had amazing books/resources for my research. Helpful website and online shopping are a plus! Je me souviens. Merci!!!!

Our visit here was my personal highlight to our trip! I arranged an appointment with Alec to assist me in confirming research I had done on my husband's family ancestry. Alec provided us with lots of information on our family tree as well as the island. It was a wonderful experience. Highly recommend if you are interested in learning more about Quebec history or the area!

Maison de nos aïeux is the reason we came to Île d'Orléans. In terms of research, it did not disappoint. I had already done extensive research of Patenaude and Thivierge families, so the visit helped certify my research.

The first floor is full of information and everything I expected. I paid for the copies of records and they pulled certificates for me. It was just wonderful.
The 2nd floor is a mix of local art exhibit/historical church exhibit, kind of lacking in identity.

The parc is wonderful with plaques and benches in memory of ancestral lineage. The sculpture also has the ancestors listed husband/wife.
Welcome home.

If you have Canadian ancestry from the days of the original pioneers in Nouvelle France you have to stop here! I got there at 3:00 and they close at 4:00 so plan accordingly. There is a Geneaologist on staff and she will look up your ancestors for you on the spot. Found out that she and I share a set of great-grandparents from 1670! It was a wonderful stop so don't forget to write down some names from your family tree before you go!

Maison de nos Aieux (roughly House of our Ancestors), was established to record the history of the founding families of Ile d'Orleans. It contains genealogical records for the 300 families, who arrived over 350 years ago. There is a fee for a tour and access to the genealogical records. There are several interesting books in the gift shop in both French and English related to the local history, and also to the filles du roy (young girls sent in the early days of settlement to marry the male settlers). The beautiful Parc des Ancetres adjoining the Maison, has an impressive sculpted tribute to the founders, and a terrific view of the St. Lawrence as it passes the northern shore of the island.

My 8th Great Grandfather was one of the original 300 founding families of the island. I can't tell you how amazing it was to visit this museum and have the staff help me learn about the history of his experience as well as giving me the modern address of my family land so I could visit it. There is also a lovely garden with an amazing monument to the families. If you have a relationship to the island or not, this is a wonderful place to learn about early settlement life.

Many people who claim French Canadian ancestry will find a wealth of information here. Many of the founding families of Ile D'Orleans went on to live in the USA and western Canada. Our first ancestors lived on this island in 1645 and we were able to find the exact land they owned on a large model of the island located in one of the rooms. Ancestral names are found throughout the island on concrete monuments and signs. A worthy stop if you enjoy history and even more if you have French ancestry.

This was a nice, little family history museum. As descendants of some of the three hundred founding families, we were keenly interested in what this museum had to offer. Even without that connection, though, the museum offered valuable insight into what life would have been like for the men and women who came to the island from France in the 1600s. The price of admission is entirely reasonable, and the building itself is quite beautiful. Our teens were not as interested in the museum as we (the adults) were, but it’s not a huge place so they hardly had a chance to become impatient with us.

It was also one of the few places that was open in April, and we appreciated that as it was actually one of the main reasons we went out to Ile d’Orleans.

The sign on the door stated that they were closed due to Halloween. This was especially disappointing to our friend who has many ancestors who were born on the island. However, the grounds were still nice to tour.

Found some family genealogy while there. Staff is friendly and helpful. The entire I'lle d'Orleans is a great place to visit. Shops, restaurants, jam tasting, fresh produce, chocolate shops. It's a fun place.
