During our short visit to the lovely city of Bamberg we wandered around the old part of town and found ourselves down by the river. There were a number of river cruise boats and some nice old looking houses on the other side of the bank. What we saw was a nice river flowing past the what was former fishermen's district in Bamberg's Island City. It's true that there are some nice half-timbered buildings from the Middle Ages, that prop each other up, and some tiny, pretty gardens.
But I only realised later that this area had been awarded the grand title of "Little Venice". Well, I've never been to Venice but if it's as modest as what we saw then I won't be putting it high on my list to visit in the near future.

We've been to the actual Venice, Italy, and this is no Venice, Italy, even a "small" version of it. While there's nothing wrong with walking along the river and looking at the buildings that are located on it, it also wasn't really anything notable for us to observe. This may be because we visited in the winter when things are not in bloom, and people are outdoors less. But our visit here wasn't much beyond a relatively quick walk along the riverbank before continuing on.

This nice place is in the centre near the famous Old Town Hall. The Regnitz River and the colourful old houses with beautiful geraniums in their windows are really very impressive. We wanted to take a boat trip but we didn’t have enough time. Maybe on the next visit.

Fischerei Street is right here in the middle of the action and one can rent apartments here right on the water if one looks closely enough. We could dangle our fishing line out of the window . I agree that it is not at all similar to Venice [ it isn't sinking though !!] but the area is just another small part of this fascinating Town. The houses on this street are not crumbling and in decay; they have been maintained and repaired [thankfully tastefully] even though some are extremely old ; [as a trip into the cellars will show.]
All of Bamberg is delightful and a week spent here certainly will not disappoint.

Klein Venedig (Little Venice) is a community of 30 15th-16th c. beautiful houses on the eastern shore of River Regnitzarm between the old cranes and Markus Bridge. The name was given to these former fishermen cottages, by two journalists in Handbook for travellers on the moon in 1842. The houses have nothing to do with the moon but they are very picturesque. You may see them from the opposite side of the river, from the 2 bridges of the Old City Hall or even better if you take a boat trip. From March to November there are 2 ships (City of Bamberg and Christl) that make an 80 minutes river trip around this area and not only. They dock at the old cranes, next to the Old Abattoir, an interesting building with a stone bull sculpture at the front. If you want to go more romantic, then don't miss an authentic Venetian gondola ride with a properly dressed Venetian gondolier! The gondolas take up to 6 people each. Klein Venedig in August it's the starting point for jousting, a competition of 2 teams in boats, everyone of them trying to push the rivals into the water. Around this area Sandkerwa (or SandKirchweih) takes place too and it's the largest folk festival in Bamberg.

I am going against most of the other posts but I don't see any correlation to the row of river front houses and Venice, and that's assuming you've been to Venice. These private houses are viewed from the opposite side of the river....ok so what? I guess I'm the summer there are boats and gondolas that take advantage of the tourists to make a buck but I don't see what the allure is.

The reference to Venice is somewhat naive. This is basically one row of renovated houses with best view from across the river.

The best place in Bamberg. It is very beautiful and characteristic, not very popular with tourists compared to the rest of Bamberg.

Klein Venedig is a quieter area in the midst of a vibrant town. It's a great spot for some lovely pictures in Bamberg.

I am not sure about which cruise you are asking about. But in general if it is a short cruise
of one or two hours I think not, for longer cruises of a day or so, it might be wise to book ahead.
Let me know which cruise you think to take and I will try to find out.
