Whilst on a River Cruise to BAMBERG we made the climb up to St. Michael’s Monastery
An amazing building from the outside but currently covered in scaffolding under construction
Still worth visiting

St Michael's Church is worthwhile making the small hike uphill to see, however, it appears as though the monastery and much of the church is under construction. Our guide told us that he can't remember a time when it wasn't under construction. Still, worthwhile wandering around the outside.

It seems that the city of Bamberg decided to put scaffolding over most of its top attractions at the same time. The St. Michael's is completely wrapped in scaffolds, and closed, 2 of the 3 towers of the cathedral, the exterior of the residence, even the interior of the new residence had scaffolding entirely covering the Emperor's Chamber. Estimates are from 1 to 8 years before all renovations are completed.

Impressive but under renovation.

Under renovation, so you cannot see much, at the moment. Impressive complex, and one of the landmarks in the old city of Bamberg.

Monastery under renovation

St. Michael's Monastery was also under intensive renovation, both inside and outside, for quite a long time. It was expected that the project would complete in 7 years' time. There was not much to see around. Just suggest others to skip this spot.

Impressive complex

And again, the most of it was closed for reconstruction. The place is on top of the hill, so you can see it from the city - you cannot miss it and you'll wonder what it is. Also a nice view over the city, restaurant and pleasent walk.

Closed ho-hum....

We had a walk up, it's not far from the Dom. It was closed but there's a nice little cafe in the garden where you can get a nice drink or ice cream with decent views over Bamberg, so don't fret.

Closed! Has been for at least 7 years

There is no point in going here. The church and former monastery have been undergoing "renovation/restoration" for at least 7 years and there is not end in sight.

Unfortunately the interior was under renovation when I visited so I wasn't able to go inside. Nonetheless...I enjoyed viewing the exterior of the building.
