It has a very eclectic collection of local history and art displayed in an historic building. It is worth an hour or so.

The museum itself was closed for winter, except for just 1 exhibition +1 special Christmas exhibition (which had limited explanation in English about what it was). We didn't go in museum, but its buildings were beautiful

Bamberg is one of the few German cities not touched by bombing during the war, It is a great city to walk through, and this museum is quite interesting. There are lots of good displays, and in particular a very large and thorough section dealing with the history of Jewish people in the city. When one of the employees who observed that we were American saw us starting to look at the Jewish section, he went off and came back with booklets that explained almost every exhibit thoroughly in English. When we thought we had seen the entire museum, that same employee realized that we had missed a big section, and took the effort to guide us to those rooms as well. We were impressed by both the displays and the service provided. The museum is located up on a hill near the cathedral, a nice area to visit in its own right.

Each time I am in Bamberg I go to the Dom. In front of the cathedral was a stand with information about the Dom Platz. that is when I discovered the Bamberg history museum was a few meters away. I paid the nominal fee and started a self guided tour. This is a comprehensive history of one of the finest cities in Bavaria. It starts at ground level and you gradually work your way up a few floors. The display covers every aspect of the origin and growth of the city. It is primarily in German but there are cards in English summarizing. This is a museum using several mediums to tell the story. Go......enjoy.

Like all the museum, the place was full of history and interesting story to tell. The place is vast and the building was magnificent. Tiny little walk up the hill but worth the effort.
