Whimsical frescoes (can frescoes be outside?) on the side of the building provide a playful feeling to your visit to this famous town hall.
If visiting Bamberg, which is a delightful small town, you will naturally see this building if you are in the old town section.
Bring your camera or phone and you will enjoy it.

No wonder this unique building features on so many of the posters for this lovely city. It has to be seen, and it's history explained by a local guide to be fully appreciated.
I wish my town hall looked like this.

I walked past the building or I should say through it as I crossed the bridge without evening realiszing this was the old city hall. The building is very unique and beautiful from the outside. I also visited the inside where there are several porcelain collections on display. Just do it.

The old city hall was built in the middle of the river to get around the refusal of the prince-bishop's refusal to allow its construction on "his" land. It is amazingly decorated, with an incredible stucco representation of St. George and the dragon, the city coat of arms. It is covered with fresco painting and stucco details as well as a half timbered addition protruding out over the river. It is an amazing and photogenic sight well worth a visit.

This is an impressive and well-preserved building best seen from the outside. The inside has been updated and restored and contains a collection of porcelain unrelated to the building's original uses. Unless you have an interest in porcelain, I suggest the inside not be on your agenda.

The Old Town Hall in Bamberg is one of the most important buildings in the historic downtown. It was the former boundary between the episcopal city of Bamberg and the bourgeois. It stands in the Regnitz River and was built between the Upper and Lower Bridge. It now houses a museum belonging to the city of Bamberg with a Ludwig collection on display, one of the largest collections of porcelain in Europe.

In 1387 the City Hall was first mentioned. It was renovated between 1461-1467 and esentially rebuilt to take the form known today. In this construction, it was mainly influenced by the Gothic.

Both sides of the building are complete with allegorical scenes and architectural details, the typical illusion of painting in this period, decorated. Small, indeed figurative elements designed to reinforce the eastern side of the spatial impression.

Why did they build it on an artificial island? The cunning citizens constructed it in the Regnitz River because it marks the boundary. This allowed them to legally defy the Bamberg Bishop at the time.

Very interesting building in the middle of the bridge. Some spectacular architecture. A great place to stop and people watch. Grab a smoked beer from a nearby establishment and just watch.

Very beautiful and interesting at the beginning of the Altstadt. We visited in a cold but beautiful day and we took lots of picture with the sun that gave it different perspectives.
