About
From the 10th century onwards, this town became an important link with the Slav peoples, especially those of Poland and Pomerania. During its period of greatest prosperity, from the 12th century onwards, the architecture of Bamberg strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century it was the centre of the Enlightenment in southern Germany, with eminent philosophers and writers such as Hegel and Hoffmann living there.

Took the train from Nuremberg to Bamberg. Walked about 15-20 minutes to the old town. Really is a pretty picturesque old German town. The Old town is walkable and every turn is a photo opportunity. Definitely worth a visit if you are staying in Nuremberg. The trains are so easy to use, punctual, and reasonably priced (especially compared to UK trains!) Bamberg makes an ideal day trip from Nuremberg, highly recommended,

I've been to so many places in Germany, but this city is my favorite. If I say that there is magic and like a fairy tale, maybe people will read it and consider it an exaggeration, but then I will just know that they have not gone. I have walked the streets of Bamberg with snow and sunshine and it was just as wonderful. If you’re in Bavaria, don’t miss an all-day trip there.

A great city, sandstone buildings, the Regnitz runs through Bamberg and with the small houses it almost looks like Venice. Very nice people. And the Pizzeria Henrietta is recommended. You can easily explore this small town in a day. We really liked it.

Founded in 902, Bamberg remains a medieval city known for its specialty smoked beer (Rauchbier). The winding streets are filled with baroque homes. The 11th century Cathedral of HRE Heinrich II, houses both his and Pope Clement II's tomb. The Old Town Hall is sited on a double-arched bridge over the Regnitz River.

Bamberg is a world heritage site. The reasons for this can be seen everywhere in the old town. From the historic half-timbered houses to the breathtaking architecture of Bamberg Cathedral - this city is full of charm and history.

The Old Town of Bamberg is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site (1993) and a charming representation of Central European medieval town that is found in the Franconian region of Germany. Altstadt can be covered fairly well as a day trip from places like Wurzburg or Nuremburg but there is enough of interest to justify an overnight stay or even longer visit for those who prefer a more leisurely pace. Highlights include the picturesque Altes Rathaus, the charming row of old fisherman houses making up what is referred to as Little Venice as well as Neue Residenz, Bamberg Cathedral, Alte Hofhaltung at Domplatz. There are interesting monuments as well as pedestrian bridges spanning the arms of the River Regnitz worth experiencing. A few smaller historic churches, market halls, beer houses, speciality museums and souvenir shops fill in the gaps, making it easy to spend a day or more sightseeing around the historic old town of Bamberg.

I already knew the city, frequented several times for work. You really feel in Germany, where you have to go straight. In fact, I was fined for having, unknowingly, parked in an area reserved for an apartment building. And to think that the license plate of the car was German, since I had rented it at Frankfurt airport, so it was not a hostile gesture towards the foreigner but only a strict respect of the rules. Here people control each other and it works. It used to be called good manners. The city centre is lovely, with its canals and medieval houses. Do not miss the Rauchbier but be careful, before you like it, since it is smoked, you must drink at least a liter. But it's worth the sacrifice, believe me.

Bamberg is the most beautiful of all cities with about 100,000 inhabitants in Germany. One reason is the beautiful old town, which was almost completely spared from the bombings of World War II. There is an awful lot to watch, you have to experience it yourself. Bamberg also has a lot to offer culturally. The many Rwstaurants, pubs and cafes show that Bamberg is a very lively student town despite its age. Bamberg offers a suitable setting for every age group to drift for many days. In short: Bamber is a dream you want to dream over and over again.

Bamberg is a small, beautiful city in Bavaria, Germany. We had a one dy tour from Karlovy Vary. City is a notch hilly so if You have problem walking a little uphill think twice. But it's definitely a great trip. Very good restaurants with a smoke beer. We enjoyed this short trip.

I was in the old town with my girlfriend on a day out in Bamberg. The streets are pedestrian and very characteristic thanks to the beautiful houses. You can find numerous monuments. shops and clubs. The Point of Sale in the square is also very picturesque and fascinating to experience. There are also some trucks that offer sandwiches with local sausages. In Maximiliansplatz there is also the sign "BAMBERG" where you can take pictures.

We were now in Bamberg in the middle of Jan 2025 at a sausage stand. So far so good. Here comes the hammer: According to the city administration, k e i n waste bins may not be placed at the (next to) bratwurst stand more because it messes up the cityscape. What a blast!!! Shall we throw the napkins, some of them mustard, on the street? There are many other things that mess up the cityscape. Who had such an idea at the city council ??? as if there were no other problems. Also, parking fees are considerably more expensive compared to other cities.

Like Regensburg, it is a World Heritage town that escaped war damage. The main attractions are the old town hall and cathedral that can be seen from the bridge over the Regnitz River.

I went up from the old town to the Brewery Museum, made a big circle, had cheesecake and cappuccino on the way, and went down along the Little Venice district, which is a little different from Venice, on the way back.

It is a little far from the station to the old town, so I bought, printed, and carried a Tages Ticket Plus (ALL DAY TICKET PLUS in English, a one-day ticket for two or more people in Japanese) that can be used by two or more people from the VGN website in advance. (It's the same in Nuremberg.)

To get there, there are frequent buses such as 901, 902, 907, 911, and 931 bound for ZOB (bus terminal) from the bus stop on the right hand side across the wide road in front of Bamberg station, and after getting off at ZOB, walk a little southwest.

I was able to get there and back by catching a timely bus with almost no waiting time on either the way there or back.

I planned a visit of 2 1/2 days this trip, as I had visited Bamberg once before in 2017. The Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as the city was not bombed during WW II, and most of the old buildings remain intact today. I recommend seeing the highlights by a walking tour on foot, taking lotsa time to simply enjoy the ambiance of the Altstadt area and sitting at a cafe or Biergarten to enjoy the view of the old Rathaus on it's own island in the Regnitz river. If I had to pick a single city to get the "feel" of German Culture past, Bamberg would be my number one choice. The Little Venice is another "can't miss" feature and the Jesuit Church overlooking the Obst Markt is also worthwhile to see the interior.

What a great historic town to visit and enjoy. The architecture , people, history and baked goods are something to soak in and enjoy. When in Bamberg be sure to try their famous Rauch Bier--smoky flavored beer. There is a whole story about a large fire destroying most of the city and "tainting " the grain used for brewing. But the grain was used as the people still needed beer. The flavor is subtle, not strong peat like some Scotch whisky. We enjoyed the experience and the local flavor.

I think it's totally overrated. The old town is manageably small - and if you put away the pink glasses really nothing special. There are a variety of other places with a much lower reputation that are much more charming.
If you look at the photos that exist of Bamberg you can see that they are always the same few subjects. There's no more.

One of the most beautiful cities I have visited in Germany and believe me, I've visited many. For me a must see. Of course you can see everything in around 2 hours but the atmosphere was so good that it makes you want to stay longer. Colorful old houses very well maintained and the bridges are special. Many places to eat however most of them with expensive prices due to the city being touristy. Still a must!

It is located behind the station, about a 5-7 minute walk. There is a view of the kitchen behind the bar.
The owner is very cordial and makes you feel welcome, very personal. She provided information about the beers available. The owner also came to the table to explain some things about the accessibility of the Sandkerwa (Bamberg festivals). The restaurant looks cozy. The food is delicious. Especially the garlic soup. This was prepared with fresh lemon which gave a nice slightly sour taste. I had never eaten anything like it before, but a few days later, in another city, I ate garlic soup again and thought the first one was by far the best. Several vegan and vegetarian dishes

I was looking forward to visiting the city, so I was even more disappointed when I
realized that I was not welcome here with my wheelchair.

In the large parking garage next to the tourist center there is no space for disabled people and certainly no parking spaces for women. When asked, the answer is that this is not technically possible. Otherwise, disabled parking spaces are more than in short supply.
It is normal that cobblestones dominate in an old city, but not having sunken sidewalks and sidewalks that taper off so sharply that you have to walk the whole way back is unpleasant.
In addition, the people of Bamberg do not shy away from parking on the remaining sidewalks in such a way that neither wheelchairs nor strollers can get past them. This means that wheelchair users have to move onto the street.
In 2008/2009, accessibility was considered, but it seems to have fallen asleep.
My tip to the city administration: You can take a tour of your city in a wheelchair. A notepad would not be a bad idea.
When asked which city tour is suitable for wheelchair users? Simply none.
Efforts have been made to ensure that the world cultural heritage is a reality, but those who do not conform to the norm with their handicaps have been left behind. What a pity.

So we were in Bamberg and.... were a bit disappointed in the end. Certainly the old town is worth seeing, but other cities have more to offer. The cathedral, however, is very impressive. But if you leave the designated tourist routes you will find that Bamberg is a dirty city. Unfortunately totally overrated.

Bamberg is a beautiful city, but there is also a lot to see in the surrounding area. It would be good if you come with your own car to explore the area better. If you come by public transport, you can rent a car cheaply from myonecar.
