The four lions on the Capital Pillar symbolise Ashoka's rule over the four directions the, wheels are the symbols of his enlightened rule and the four animals (elephant, bull, horse, lion) symbolise four adjoining territories of India.
Best time to visit Best time to visit Sarnath is during the winter months of October to March, when the climate is favourable.

These remnants of the Ashoka Pillar have been showcased among the excavation site at the Sarnath. Only the three portions of the broken pedestal remain here, the rest of the top portion bearing the four lions and other animals & the chakra have been displayed at the ASI museum in the vicinity.

The Ashokan Pillar , our National Emblem is located in the Dhamek Stupa Complex and is enclosed in a glass case. Unfortunately, the shaft has broken into 3 parts which are present here , and the upper head, with the Lions and the Ashok Chakra is kept in the adjacent museum. Worth a visit

Those who travel historical sites or ruins of the pasts, must bear in mind the importance of these items and the history behind them. Then you can appreciate and not say," Oh it is nothing, just some pillars" in a cage. They were constructed during the time of King Ashok and now part of India's National emblem. They are precious and kept inside a glass box at Sarnath where Buddha gave his valuable sermons to his disciples. The parts of the Pillars are kept inside the museum. Sarnath is in a vast land with lots of ruins, Dhamek Stupa and some other important stupas with historical importance. Time to visit all these will take more than 3 hours but one can spend like 5 to 10 minutes on each item.

Mighty Mauryan King Ashoka built this Pillar known after his name as the Ashoka Pillar. Such pillars were built and placed all over northern India in the 3rd century BC. Made of stone about 50 feet tall, all have the same craft form.

So old and still so beautiful. They'd really knew quality back then, almost 2500 years ago. The only bad thing about the Sarnath archeological site is they are letting hawkers run free pestering tourists even after buying tickets

The Sarnath pillar bears one of the Edicts of Ashoka, an inscription against division within the Buddhist community, which reads, "No one shall cause division in the order of monks". The Sarnath pillar is a column surmounted by a capital, which consists of a canopy representing an inverted bell-shaped lotus flower, a short cylindrical abacus with four 24-spoked Dharma wheels with four animals (an elephant, a bull, a horse, a lion).
