Sepino is known for its archeological site (Saepinum-Altilia) which is located in the valley just steps away from the main road Campobasso-Benevento. However if you drive a few kilometers up to the modern village of Sepino you will discore its historic center with the beautiful piazza Nerazio Prisc and at its center a stone fountain. At one corner you have the city hall building (Palazzo Giacchi which dates back to Roman times) and next to it the Church of Santa Cristina. The church has a three nave interior and a very particular bell tower whose top in the form of a huge jug is built in wrought iron.

Santa Cristina is the patron saint of Sepino (about 2,000 inhabitants) and July 24 is the biggest feast when mass is said mass and then Santa Cristina is carried by local pallbearers on their shoulders in an old time tradition for a long procession. I was fortunate to be there on that day and witness the hustle and bustle in and around the piazza, the church filled to capacity with not even standing room left. And then the moment everyone has been waiting for: the statue of Santa Cristina comes out of the church for athat long procession which ends with the return of the statue back to the church. The crowds then disband and it's off home to the family dinner.
