Hemkund Sahib and its glacier lake situated at a elevation of 4633 meters(13650 ft ) is surrounded by seven mountain peaks each mountain having a " Nishan Sahib" on its cliff. Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara is dedicated to the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh(1666-1708). During winter months from October to April Hemkund Sahib is inaccessible due to the frozen route and in May Sikh pilgrims gradually clear the trek pathway, a social service called "Kar Seva" in Sikhism. We hired Mules costing each of us Rs 2500 for the up/ down fare to Hemkund Sahib and back to Ghangaria .The mule trek to Hemkund Sahib began at 0745 and it was a steady uphill walk for the Mules on treacherous large stone stairs.Unlike the " Valley of flowers" trek route which is through forest pathways the " Hemkund Sahib" trek route is a 1,100m(3600ft) climb of 6 Km through a series of rock stairs, slippery and broken in parts .A trekker should be as sure footed as a mule walking up this mountain trek of large stone stairs. After a brief rest at the Dhabba began our ascent and passed alongside the glacier on the mountainside which I first mistook to be rough cemented concrete.
Finally at 0945 hrs we reached Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara situated on the peak of the mountain. On entering the precincts of the Gurudwara compound was given a scarf to cover my head .Went to the glacier lake and it's beauty against the backdrop of the Gurudwara and Glacier mountain's was indescribable in the bright hot sunshine.Pilgrim's were having a dip in the ice cold glacier lake .Tourists are allowed to take a dip and hence decided to immerse myself in ice cold water and the experience was totally different as not everyday can a person have a dip in a authentic glacier lake. Finally at 1100 hrs began our descent by mule and at 1245 hrs we reached " Pony/ Mule Taxi point"in Ghangaria and after paying the handler Rs 2500 and taking a photo with " Kamala" my mule we headed to our hotel.

Hemkund Sahib was a last minute addition in our already chalked out Chardham Yatra itinerary & I'm so happy & grateful that we did it. If you stay in Govindghat the helipad is very close & you may take a pony ahead or just walk it up. But after you reach the top you will certainly be rejuvenated by the positive vibes of this most revered pilgrimage of Sikhs with a wonderful serene lake in its vicinity. Do not miss the Lokpal Laxman temple which is adjacent to this Gurudwara where Lord Laxman had meditated. This is the only temple in the whole of India which is dedicated to Lord Laxman alone. Not to be missed pilgrimage when you are on a Chardham Yatra regardless of your religion. The efforts for the climb are really worth the satisfaction you will achieve after visiting this Gurudwara. Very highly recommended for sure.

uptill The journey begins from Rishikesh Gurudwara which is maintained by Hemkunt management Trust.
Travel from Rishikesh to Govind Ghat is 290 KMS and around 9 hours journey. Enroute we can take blessings at Srinagar, Nagrasu & Joshimath Gurudwaras. You need to stay at Govind ghat Gurudwara. Next day start early for Poolna hamlet by Sumo or any other vehicle. From Poolna you can take Mules, palki or by walk trek of around 11 kms. Reach Govind Dham. Stay at Gurudwara or take any hotel on the same lane.
Next day morning start your trek of 6 kms to Hemkunt sahib early, plan your journey in such a way that we need to reach Gurudwara before 12 noon. Coz, after 14:00 the management at Hemkunt Sahib will start asking pilgrims to descend to lower altitude due to uncertain weather.
Mules charge 2500 to & fro to Hemkunt sahib.
Palkis may take anything between 10k and 14k based on weight.
Helicopter ride is available based on weather condition. It flies from Govind Ghat to Govind Dham & vice-versa which charges Rs. 2975 uptill 80 kgs weight one side.
Hotels at Govind Dham charge anywhere between 500-2500 based on facilities that they provide. You will get hot water bucket atRs. 50-100 per bucket at hotels for bathing. One can stay at Gurudwara rooms free of cost but there you will not get hot water for bathing. Weather is very uncertain at Govind Dham.

The beauty of the Hemkund Sahib trek is that you access this pilgrimage site and the Valley of Flowers from the same base. Technically, once you get to Ghangaria, you can trek to Hemkund Sahib in one day. The same is with the Valley of Flowers.
In about 3 hours of trekking from Ghangaria, we reached the summit, to be greeted by a massive Gurudwara flanked by 7 towering peaks on 3 sides. Just behind the main building is a lake. Called the ‘Laxman kund’, it is fed by an underwater stream. We were greeted with sights of the faithful stripping to their undergarments and taking a dip in the freezing waters!
The gurudwara itself is a pretty large building. It’s floor is lined with warm deep carpets, blankets almost. After paying our respects, we headed to the langar hall, for a meal. The days menu was khichdi, which I had 6 bowls of! I don’t know if it was the exhaustion, the cold or the sheer beauty of where we were, but I haven’t had such delicious tasting khichdi in my life!
After eating our fill, we thanked the amused volunteers in the langar and headed back down. The trek back down was an easy 2.5 hour – long stroll, enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery.

It was beautiful to see glacier mountains at the back of the lake and then the two sacred identities standing all eternal beside the lake- The Laxman temple and Shri Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, which provide a sense of fulfilment when you reach there after a challenging yet satisfying trek of steep 6km along with 1100 steps. We received the hot khichdi and chai in the langar, which was delicious and so filling after facing those chilling cold winds on the way up there. It is the highest placed gurudwara of the world which makes the trek worth of all the challenges in itself. All Trip credits goes to Himalayan Moments accommodation food stay travelers all satisfied and amazing. All staff behave very polite. Always go with Himalayan moments

This place is heaven. A must recommebed shrine to visit. You can reach govindghat from haridwar from where yatra starts for Shri Hemkund Sahib. Take any bus going to Badrinath and deboard at govind dham. From there start early morning yatra and reach Govind dham ghagaria and take break. Next day complete rest of the 6 km trek to Shri Hemkund Sahib which os little tough. Don't forget to take a holy dip in the sarovar.

Being a sikh or frequent traveller you must have thought of visiting Hemkunt Sahib ji at least once in your lifetime. If yes then do it without giving any second thought to it. Being a Devotee it is like a mission to reach God's place and say your prayers. The necessary thing required to do this trip is that one must be physically fit without any breathing and joint pains issue,Because this trip is challenging enough if we do this trip by trek.Visiting this place on pony or helicopter ride is like missing out the real excitement and adventure.Surely if one is left with some energy after visiting this place and he or she loves being around the hills and flowers one can visit Valley Of Flowers on next day.Once you return back from this journey a person gets a feel of proud about self for visiting this place successfully with Waheguru's blessings.Best time to visit June,August & September.Avoid visiting in May due to heavy rush and in July due to consistent rains and landslides on road trip journey.

always visit this place after 15september to 15 oct only at that time monsoon are over and climate was pleasant. rush was also reduced. hotels were available at cheaper rates. i visit 10 times but season time mentioned above was best. horses reached at top near gurudwara if you not capable of tracking. you see many adventures tracking done by peoples on discovery, net geo etc you feel that adventure at this place and check endurance and fitness of your body. if any body who have a good job, good salary, good house, good children if he did not take his family and friends to these destination and enjoy tracking then all he waste his life till date who did not see how beautiful nature is and actually how beautiful India is? If you did not spare 15 day a year for you or for your family or friends than i think it is wastage of life given by god. it is very cheap and best you have to only take decision.

There are two options to reach Hemkund Saheb Gurudwara from base camp of Ghangaria- pony ride or walk on foot. It was a test of strength for us to reach up. People start early to make it before the gurudwara closes (2.00PM if I am not wrong). No one is allowed to stay there so one needs to return on same day. The trek is much better maintained than the trek of valley of flowers and there are tea stalls at distance of about every 1.5 or 2 km. There are no toilets on the way. Temporary toilets were locked as if they were having some treasure. Even if they were open, I am sure they would not be in a condition to use by humans. I would recommend that one should start early (before 7.00AM) if possible from hotel and should not make long breaks initially. It really takes some time to reach on top if you are on food and not really very fit physically. Raincoat and umbrella are must for rainy seasons.

Hi. I plan on doing the pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib and trek to the Valley of Flowers end July.
Based upon your past experience:
1) Will it be busy at this time, with a lot of people along the route?
2) How likely is it that I might get a room at Gurdwara Gobind Ghat & Gobind Dham without prior reservations?
3) Should I make reservations at local hotels instead?
4) What sort of weather should I expect?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond :)

HI. Am travelling from Mumbai tomorrow. and likely to reach Govind ghat by road from Dehradun. Having gone through some of the travellers reviews, my concern for a member in my group has got me bit worried. He is 50 plus, never been physically active. The unavoidable trek has raised a query in my mind. What if one decides to do the entire trek, and midway is unable to carry on. Is there any assistance available to carry on ? the second lap from Govind Dham till the Hemkund gurudwara is more challenging.Any assistance for a ditto situation there ?
