This is a beautiful calming cathedral of white stone and a delightful simplicity, especially compared with the baroque styles found in Lecce. The town is a hidden jewel of medieval streets full of charm and hidden surprises. Don’t miss Bitonto!

If you visited Baroque Lecce you should find some time to visit the Northern part of Puglia. The cathedral in Bitonto is the opposite of the churches in Lecce. Built by the Normans in 12th-13th century it belongs, in my opinion, to the most beautiful Romanesque churches in the world. The interior is of impressive simplicity and the unusual height of the ceiling gives it a sense of space that is often lacking in French Romanesque churches. The outside has a beautiful facade and the sides are the most beautiful I have ever seen. Below the church there is fine crypt and recent excavations which merit visiting (3 Euro). We were here in 2000 and the church was closed, ever since revisiting it was on our bucket list and we finally succeeded! Beware, it will probably close between 13.00 and 17.00.
Similar churches can be found in Bari, Barletta, Trani (see my review) and Melfi

Again a romanic cathedral, overdecorated during the baroc period, is undergoing works to bring back the original style

The Bitonto Cathedral must be one of the finest examples of an early Christian cathedral in Italy. This beautiful Romanesque cathedral dates from the 12 century and is a refreshing change from the 'over the top' Baroque churches which can be found in great numbers throughout Italy. The simple lines result in uncluttered space which is quite overwhelming. When we arrived at the cathedral the crypt was closed but as we were leaving we met the gentleman who administers it and he opened it up for us. This is not to be missed! An extensive architectural project has uncovered previous building which reveals the development of Christianity during the different eras since it's establishment in the 12 century. This cathedral is certainly worth going to see.

This stunning Romanesque Church predates all the Baroque ones in places like Lecce by hundreds of years! Bitonto was the place where Christianity arrived in Southern Italy, and when it did it built in top of Roman buildings. This Cathedral has restored these layers of history in an amazing underground crypt .. It is so well done, the descriptions are in English and. German as well as Italian. The church above the crypt is stunning in its simplicity .. With very unusual painted roof rafters. Really it is worth the trip to Bitonto just to see this magical place. The locals are very proud it it, but it isn't geared up for major tourism so if you want to look around ... Just ask a local and they would be happy to help. We will come back ...

This Romanesque building from the late 11th century has early Christian church ruins in the lower level. There is a tile figure of a Gryphon (Griffin) dating back a couple thousand years. It was found while repairing a church floor. A gryphon is described as a mythical monster with head and wings of a bird and body of a feline and a symbol in Christian art of the double nature of Jesus Christ -- divine and human. There is a viewing area on the main floor level to look down on the Gryphon. But going down to the lower level allows a better view and prespective. The Ambo (pulpit) is of marble carved by Apulian stonecarvers.

An amazing cathedral with Romanasque architecture, mosaic floor situated in the old town of Bitonto. Largest in Puglia. Definitely worth a visit especially to the crypt which has excavations going back to 5th century.

I was already smitten with the local type of Romanesque architecture in Puglia, when I came to Bitonto, and I was blown away. A marvellous place, this cathedral, with a rich history that is well worth some attention. Pay attention to details: in the facade, in the little columns up high on the outside side wall, the pulpit in the nave (such excellent craftsmanship!), the frescoes in the crypt, and the excavations below the nave. The highlight is the amazing mosaic of a griffin.

Sie müssen außerhalb des historischen Zentrums parken, zum Beispiel auf der Piazza Marconi oder der Piazza Moro oder in der Nähe
