- Getaway651492447683 contributionsOutstanding!!We visited as a family with 2 kids under 8 in the Oct school holidays. We are tassie locals and have been to other tassie caves, but not this one before. We loved our visit and will be recommending it to everyone. It’s family run, and the family who run the caves are so very knowledgeable and passionate. The caves themselves have many cool features, but it was the people who work there which made the visit so great. Very reasonably priced. Do not miss this attraction!!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 10, 2023
- John D16 contributionsFamily of five visitWhat a fabulous experience, stunning caves with a friendly, funny and experienced local guide (thanks Ben! You were so stealthy!) Thank you also for walking a bit slower so my 17 year old daughter who has an injured knee could participate. 10/10! What a find, the lack of commercialisation was so refreshing!!Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 22, 2024
- Al SetteBentleigh East, Australia14 contributionsWell worth a visitDefinitely a must-see. We absolutely loved the caves and it was something you don't get the chance to see too often. I highly recommend a visit. We spent nearly an hour in the caves woth a tour which was very informative and entertaining.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 3, 2024
- Joycee S21 contributionsGunn's Plains Caves - an underground wonderland.Gunn's Caves - what a hidden gem! The best we've ever seen anywhere in the world. There were 54 steps down into the cave and many safe walking areas to see the millions of years old stalactites/mites. Finished off with the glow worms in pitch black (that morph into a fly believe it or not). Our wonderful guide, Geoff, was a wealth of knowledge (and also had lots of funny quips) and told us the very interesting history of how the farmer who owns the land lost his dog down a hole and went down to find him and discovered the caves that seem to go forever. If its the only thing you do in Tasmania, this should be the one!Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 6, 2024

A family member recommended we go to Gunns Plains Caves not far from where we were staying in Howth.
We had a great tour with Tour guide Trish, who gave us lots of interesting information about the caves and has a great sense of humour. The tour takes about 1 hour, make sure you have a warm coat on as it is quite chilly down there! The cave itself is quite lovely, with strategic lighting to highlight some of the beautiful structures inside. A must see if you are in the area.

Went to have a look and joined a tour through the cave.
Was a great experience, the guide was casual and not only tolerated the challenging member of the tour without showing her frustration but managed him quite well.
The caves were great and very interesting with well maintained steps that were not too extreme to climb and descend.
There is ample public parking and not too far from Ulverstone, far from the commercialised hustle and bustle of the Buchan Caves in Victoria that I visited a few months earlier.
Nice grounds and even a table for a picnic.

We booked over the phone to make sure we can secure a spot for our desired timeslot. This cave is hidden in plain sight and you can never assume as this is situated in a farm area. We were greeted by Geoff our quirky and funny tour guide who made this tour a lot more enjoyable and memorable as one would bargain for. The tour was for about an hour and we were loaded with lots of interesting information about the cave and how it was discovered. You will also see the longest shoal in the world which was for me the most interesting thing to see inside this cave. When we saw the glow worms, I thought this made our drive from Cradle Mountain all worth it!
I highly recommend this tour and its good for all ages and sizes just wear comfy shoes and clothes as there are narrow spaces and steep ladders to get through.

Interesting experience, not very commercial. Narrow walkways in some places made it really authentic. It’s not like some massive caves that you go into and feel like a million people visited before you. The guide was particularly good and had an amazing sense of humor. When he says you are about to go down 10 steps on a ladder, backwards, he wasn’t joking.

We had Geoff as our guide and it ended up being a private tour which was fine with us. His humour made the time fly and an hour seemed to pass in a moment.
Well done walkways, I am over 6 foot so had to really stoop down in a few spots and the stairs are wet, slippery and quite narrow so good walking shoes are an absolute must.
Great information and beautiful lighting, well worth the drive and would recommend.

We visited as part of a cruise ship tour. The caves were extensive and truly stunning. We are no cave experts, but fortunately our guide was able to point out all the key formations. The route around the caves is all paved and with handrails, but it is a little hard going in places so not for someone with any walking difficulties. Our guide was also very humorous and made the visit fun. The glow worms at the end were a high-light. It is cold in the caves (about 11C) - which we enjoyed as it was a hot day. The tour lasted about 45 minutes and was an enjoyable part of our trip to Gunns Plains.

We really enjoyed the tour of Gunns Plains Cave. The entry fee was very reasonable. We were running a bit late for the tour time and so I rang ahead, and Geoff was very happy to wait for us to start the tour. It ended up we were the only ones on the tour so it felt like we had a private tour of the cave!
It is a wonderful cave system and Geoff has a great knowledge of the cave and I would recommend a drive out to Gunns Plains to see this natural wonder!

We had a great experience on the tour of the Gunns Plains Caves. Trish gave us a very warm welcome when we booked in and gave us some interesting historical facts about the caves before our tour even began.
Chris our guide was amazing and made us feel comfortable and safe the whole time. I was a bit nervous about entering the cave but he made me feel totally at ease. Chris was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. Please make the drive out to Gunn Plains for this great tour.

Everything about this tour was better than expected. The formations are spectacular.
The drive to the caves was through really picturesque landscape.
Once at the caves we were shown through by a really good guide who gave us lots of info about the way the caves were formed, how they were discovered and how they have been managed over the years.
.
The initial climb into and out of the cave is steep steps but doable. I'm not young and not svelte but I was able to do it.
There is a stream running through the cave and it provides a delightful background to the commentary.
The icing on the cake of this natural wonder is the glow worm cave.
The booking process with Geoff was an example of exceptional customer service.
We were visiting Burnie on a cruise ship and arrival times were a moving feast. Geoff worked with us to make sure we got to see the caves. Exceptional customer service.

My husband walks without a walking stick but hut not good at climbing or very rough terrain. Should he visit?
Written February 12, 2018
There are handrails all through but there are 270 steps throughout including 54 steep ones on the way in an on the way out with handrails. The pathway is even for 99%. The rest is not very uneven.
Most people with reasonable mobility can get through using the handrails.
Will leave it to your judgement as to whether he would be able to do the steps.

Geoff

I only have time to see one cave with glow worms, either Gunns plains or mole creek. Which one is better?
Written December 22, 2016
Both Mole Creek and Gunns Plains have great tours. Until Dec 19 2016 Marakoopa Cave at Mole Creek was closed due to floods. This meant that if you wished to see glowworms you would have missed out as King Solomon Cave doesnt show glowworms. Gunns Plains Caves has Glowworms.
Both have nearby Wildlife Parks. Wings Wildlife Park at Gunns Plains is and excellent park and also has food and various forms of accommodation available from cabins to powered sites and camping ground.

Would it be ok to take a 4 year old on cave tour given steep steps?
Written November 25, 2016
Most 4 year olds are able too handle the tour even with just a little help. Babies in arms to very mature people as long s they are mobile are able to enjoy the tour.
