Lovely place to stay - Nice clean beach areas. Central for visiting Aigues Mortes, Grau du Roi et La Grande Motte. Also Good for Avignon and Arles and general exploration of the area between Marseille and Montpellier. Fly into Nimes for a hassle free experience.

Nice beach but far too many people. Crazy. There is a beach outside of town but only locals allowed there. As this is discrimination I disrecommend the whole area which is the usual money machine that has lost its charme.

Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is fabulous place. Arrived on bus from Arles 2.7 euros for 35km trip. Helpful driver places cases in boot. Compact friendly town with good variety of restaurants.
The Tourist Information Bureau produced an excellent guide in English complete with town and locality maps.
We enjoyed it hiring bikes and riding to the lighthouse and also north to Cabanes de Cambon to see the black bulls. Riding the famous white horses along the beach and through the reserve to see the flamingoes herons and egrets is a must.
The Little Train is an excellent introduction and stops at regular intervals to see wild life.Don't miss twice weekly market or a chance to climb (literally) on the Church Roof. Regular Horse and Bulls event are held in Arena.

I travelled to Saintes Maries de la Mer today. All my life I have wanted to ride a horse on the Camargue( from my French student days) So I went there. The area is worn and tired. I saw sad and despondent horses and the people who ran the Promenade a Cheval places were certainly less than enthusiastic about the useless tourist. The place was dirty and, I felt, after going on a horse ride , that I have walked around better rubbish dumps than this!
I know this sounds harsh but I think the horses are worn and weary.... gone are ht proud horses... the people who run these things are totally impersonal and make no attempt to communicate on any level with us.... I feel sorriest for the horses......... at least I could get out of the Camargue... they couldn't .
When you get to the beach and see the whole total focus on tourism and the rubbish associated with it, you realise that this place has lost its heart and soul.....
I would never return to the Camargue as I wasn't actually sure what it was.... just another tourist machine.................

We were unaware of the camarguais and it should be highlighted more to tourists, its wonderful with the beautiful beach not far from magnificent wet lands. There is also an impression left on you by the cowboy like atmosphere within the camarguais.
When there don't forget to take the petit train a good hour to see the local environs.
Of all the places we visited in France this place has left the biggest impression. Great.

This is already our third visit and we liked it again. Few tourist, laid back, pleasant climate, sun, good food, all very relaxing. Take your bike and explore the area cycling along the sea shore. Or enjoy horse riding through the marches or along the empty beaches. Visit nearby historic towns like Montpellier or Arles.

We loved the whole area. It was pretty windy the days we were there and too cold for swimming (compared to say Costa Rica) for me. We enjoyed watching the kite boarders enjoying the wind. There are a lot of break waters that form jetties in the public beach area to calm the waves down for swimming. There’s plenty of paid parking and we were happy to pay €5 per day to park there. The town with tons of shops and restaurants is right there too. My only regret is that I didn’t bring clothes or shoes suitable for riding. We took a boat trip that we rather enjoyed as well. The marina is right there. We plan to come back next year more prepared.

Holiday location, nice clean beach right in the town, great location for horseriding trips in the Camargue region. Great seafood restaurants. Finding parking in the narrow streets is a challenge

We stayed in the area 2 nights while touring France. As Samuel Johnson said "the purpose of travel is to see the Mediterranean", and the beach here fits that bill. It was cool when we were there, but the beaches were clean and large. Probably the nicest thing was that there weren't many American tourists, so you felt more a part of French culture. We'd go back.

Hey,
does anyone know if there are public showers available to rinse off the salty water after swimming? Or maybe if it is possible to use the showers of a nearby campsite? (and how much it costs?)
thanks!!

Hi. There are public showers to rince off after swimming. But I don’t know if they’re gonna be in use cause high season is over.
Enjoy your time there !

Are there mosquitos in the area?
Written August 9, 2015
There are some depending on the area you are in and the wind. We rode horseback out on the dunes and along the beach and didn't encounter any at all until we went behind the dunes and into the marsh areas. We had on mosquito spray so they weren't too bad. If you are in a still area close to the marsh, I hear they can be bad but we were there in May so it was not a peak time for them.
