Touring near Fontvieille and had passed the windmill previously. Read up on it's quite important French specific past. For the area it was made famous across all of the country, read by children everywhere and made into a movie. Museum is really simple and just the mill but the surrounding trails are lovely. Perfect for a break or picnic. It is evocative of how desolate and provincial this district once was after Roman and medieval glory days. Bus loads of French people visiting so it’s obviously a destination.

As windmills go, it is not especially big or attractive, so it is only important for its history and Daudet connectiontion. You can go inside for a small fee and see the internal mechanism. It is located in a grat location with beautiful views.

I have to admit that despite being a francophile and reasonably well read in European literature I had never heard of Daudet.
Its a nice walk from the town of Fontvielles but don't expect anything exciting

too sad is now close, i use to go there when i was young, after 10 years went back with my kids just to find out it has been close. i guess was too old and dangerous for tourist, but can still walk around the hill, the kids took picture of what ever was there.
the castle is also not accessible. nice vieux of the village from up there.
lots of memorie when back then use to see lot of tourist buses coming from Germany, china etc.., to visit

I had read the works of Alphonse Daudet, especially "Lettres de mon Moulin" and was really looking forward to visiting the eponymous windmill. But somehow I was disappointed. I am not sure what I expected but the surroundings were less than enthralling and the charge to enter the small premises was more than I was prepared to shell out. All in all a disappointing trip. It may just be me though!

Fontvieille's a lovely town, but not exactly the epicentre of Provence tourism - which is probably why it's such a pleasant place to be. Before we went there for a week in 2013 I'd bought an English translation of Letters From My Windmill by Alphonse Daudet to learn a bit about their famous literary son. (It's a curious collection of short stories, some of which are apparently featured in the 1992 French language film "Le Moulin de Daudet".) This year we had two weeks in Fontvieille so it seemed obligatory to spend just a little time walking up past the tourist office from Le Cafe to see the windmill for myself. The sails are fixed, and it wasn't possible to see inside - although I understand that group visits can be arranged at the tourist office. Not the most impressive place we visited during our time in Provence, and the terrain isn't great for comfortable walking - but it certainly offers great views over the surrounding countryside.

The windmill sits gently on top of a hill just outside the little village of Fontvieille, a charminng place. It is definitely worth a visit. The street is beautiful for those biking through Provence. There is a lovely gift shop inside the windmill and you can take the stairs up to the top for a better view. The nearby Daudet Museum is a short walk.

A short walk out of Fontvieille brings you to this charming sight and a further walk will bring you to the other windmills nearby; well worth the stroll if you're into this sort of thing!

Of the four windmills, this was the most touristy. There were park rangers playing pokemon and other visitors getting in the way of photos. Nevertheless we wanted to complete the set and managed it before a very pleasant lunch in town.
