This is what in France and especially at Pornichet a long time famous beach resort at the La Baule-Guerande area, they use to call an Institution, a must see, a place where as well the locals as the visitors love to meet to have take it easy drinks, yes! not only a single shot.
Le Bidule opened as I heard in the 30'. At the beginning it was a kind of cellar in a garage where people used to come and refill their wine bottles from the tanks or the barrels.
Later the owner changed it to a bar without changing much except customers were coming not to take away their bottles but to taste on the spot.
I came first to this place more than 30 years ago, I returned this week-end : nothing has changed, place is packed even in the winter season, with locals who enjoy friends company around a barrel table having either Banyuls or Muscat (sweet white)
It is friendly, it is busy, it is good and cheap.
When there you feel comfortable among the real people living there.

Le Bidule is unique. You don't go there for a quiet drink.
You need to get ready for the visit: buy your "saucisson", your nuts or any other snack and walk in.

You will select from a red or a white fortified wine served in a small glass. Pay cash €2 a glass. Crack open your bag of snack on the top of the old cask used as table and enjoy life!

This place was packed with a wide variety of clientele, well worth a visit just for the atmosphere. Apparently it’s a bit of a legend in France , staff go around carrying the bottles and glasses and you pay them from the floor not the bar.

A must see when you are in Pornichet. Ambiance is special, bring your own appetizer, be not afraid to receive cheap wine on your feet, being hit and don't be claustrophobic. But everyone comes here. Don't know why ... but everyone is there ;o)

If you visit Pornichet, you MUST go tgo ''le Bidule''.
As my parents live in Nantes, I go every summer there with my friends.
I strongly suggest you to come early (6:30-7Pm) if you want to have a place in the courtyard.
This place is not a club, it closes at around 9PM.
It's a great place to start your night. They only serve 2 kinds of drinks: the ''bidule'' or ''muscat'' in a small glass (2 euros/glass).
You can bring your own snacks (crips, nuts, ''saucisson'' or whatever...).

I'll keep coming back to Bidule month after month. I know wine is fresh, service is not elegant and there is nothing special, but The atmosphere is something to Be experienced. A glas of wine is 2€ it's not a high quality but it's local. People are relaxed and The feeling is perfect. Enjoy

Such a unique place, great to meet friends for an aperitif.
Everyone is friendly and the simple choice of red or white makes life easier.
