Often referred to a King's Gate, this is the entrance to main boulevard of restaurants and shops. During the day expect crowds. If you wish to avoid the hustle and bustle come early or late. In any case, this is not the main reason most...More

Busy busy busy and so many people pushing and thronging in every shop and restaurant which were all over priced. This is not an uplifting experience.

We arrived during the heat of the day and the porte was very crowded, as one would expect. However, we still loved the beautiful architecture and enjoyed seeing it. Since we were staying at a hotel on the island, we went back at night and...More

Again read the history and look at this amazing Porte. There are lots of shops in this region so you can buy lots of books about the whole place. Most people go to the shops.

I arrived after 7:30 p.m. (1930 hours). What a perfect time to arrive and walk through this gate, climb the stairs to the ramparts, enjoy a gorgeous view of the bay and take in the sounds of the sea gulls flying overhead. Magical for me....More

This will be your last chance of some reasonable personal space as once you enter the walls close in and the crowds build. This is the start of a day of queues. If you are to reach the top, this evil has to be overcome.

It may seem crowded, and usually is, but take some time to stop and admire the construction of this gate, and try to think back how it was used in earlier times when the castle was to be defended.

Boulevard gate is the 2nd gate you pass through enroute to La Grand Rue. There is an English cannon on display in the area between the Porte de l’Avancee and this gate. The tourism office is located to the left just prior to this gate.

Too many people and noise. They set up a pretty nice transport system from the parking lots and bus stop. Or you can walk. The hotels are not far from the island. But what a mess.... Find a quiet coastal town.
