The barrage connects the mainland where you must park your car with St. Michel.
For the best experience I suggest walking to St. Michel's over the barrage as you're facing it directly for around 45 min you need to reach it. You will be awarded with many different perspectives and photo ops.
However, on your way back (after 4-5 hrs visiting and climbing the Abbey) take the shuttle bus back.

This dam was installed relatively recently and helps to control the flow of the river and prevent too much silting up of the bay of Mont Saint-Michel. There are some signs with more information about the dam and how it works which we found really interesting. We attempted to time things to be there right as the dam opened to let water through but missed it. That said, we enjoyed looking at the mechanisms and watching the water flow through. Also, the dam has a nice walkway and seating area, from which you get wonderful views of the abbey. We spent two nights at a hotel nearby and took multiple opportunities to visit the dam and see the views at various times of day.

The dam is open to the public 24/7 except during maintenance periods. The sluice gates are closed 1-½ hours before high tide, then opened 10 minutes before high tide, again closed just prior to ebb tide, and then gradually opened 6 hours after high tide. The gradual opening creates a progressive water release without waves. The opening cycle lasts between 2 to 5 hours.
There is seating built into the deck of the dam (observation terrace) so you can watch the action comfortably. This is an engineering marvel.

Having visited the ins and ours of the mont st michel I can testify that the best places to take pictures of the mont st michel is in fact whilst standing outside of the mont st michel. There is a convenient bus that takes tourist to the mont st michel from the car park every couple of minutes (it's a 40 minute walk otherwise) although beware, the parking will cost you 12.30 euros regardless of how long you stay for. You can park for free closer to the abbey in the local supermarkets car park and still get the free bus for the rest of the way... well you live and learn!

You are not coming to this area for the Barrage, unless you are an engineering maniac, but it is a good spot to get a view on Mont Saint Michel. Also plenty of seating places if you are tired.

Would be interesting to see the dam in action, but as I said - you are not coming here for the dam.

The Barrage sur le Couesnon is a remarkable feat of engineering and aesthetic progress, helping to preserve the beauty and dynamic environment surrounding Mont Saint Michel for future generations.

It was fascinating to learn how this unique dam harnesses the power of the tides to help prevent sediment build-up to ensure that the remarkable tidal transitions around the island continue to operate without the man-made disruption of the former causeway. It is especially impressive that such an important, utilitarian structure is actually beautiful itself, with thoughtful design decisions helping blend with, and highlight, the historic landscape.

Visually, the dam is okay. But it is a marvelous and important engineering project with a location that provides nice views of Mont Saint Michel, especially at night. Plus, you have to walk past it on the way to the Abbey.

Fascinating and artistic dam structure, well worth hopping off the bus at this stop. Features Arabic, Jewish, Latin and Greek letters to symbolize the East and West history of the Abbey.
