Wonderful Woods - Magic Paths
Jun 2021 • Family
Beautiful forest with tracks and paths all round and across. The tracks are colour coded for different themes.
You can choose a hillside walk or walk into the open valley and of course just remain in the thicket of trees in the wonderful woods.
Gorgeous old trees and new offsprings, moist moss and mysterious grounds.
We came in a very hot day and the woods gave us plenty shade and comfort to track for an hour and half, something which would have been too hard in open fields in 30 degrees Celsius.

Very positive experience
Oct 2020
Can't say anything bad about this place which deserves to be visited. We got there very early in the morning, in the fall when there were not many people.
Many good potential walking routes, with good signage about the history

Possibility to see wild european buffalo
May 2019 • Friends
This place is an unique possibility to see european buffalo in their natural enviroment. It is now possible to drive through Almindingen, and if you are lucky, you will see the buffaalo. A small herd is situated here. The best way to see them, is to park the car, and walk into the woods. There is also a bird tower near a lake in the woods, where you can se numerous bird species. We walked about 2 km in the wood on a broad path, and got the glimpse of 5 buffaloes, quite an amazing sight!
Almindingen has a lot of other views to offer, if you go there on foot. Among other things the highest top on the island Rytterknægten (162 m above sea level), and the eccho valley, Paradise hills, Raven valley. And in the springtime, the valley is covered with bears garlic.

Rytterknægten is a bit disappointing
Aug 2018 • Solo
Almindingen has lots to offer. However, the highest point on Bornholm, Rytterknægten, was a bit disappointing to me. You can experience finer views from other sites on Bornholm.

The largest forrest on Bornholm
May 2018 • Couples
Almindingen is with its 3800 ha the 3rd largest forest
in Denmark. It is rigth in the center of Bornholm and the planting of the forrest started in 1809.
This is a large rekreation area for everyone, walk , bike and enjoy.
You need to visit Rytterknægten the highest point with 162 meter, it is for free and also visit the Ekkodalen and find out if it works ;-)
During the cold war a Radar was build in the area.
In 2012, 7 Polish Bison was placed in an fenced area.
There is a lot to see and we can only very highly recomend a visit to Almindingen.
We will for sure be back.

Strolled around
Oct 2017 • Couples
After a very fine lunch at Christianshøjkroen we strolled around in the forrest. There are lots of markings and signs so you don't loose your way. It was a very fine autumnday

The Bison-Wood.
Jun 2016 • Couples
Bison [BAJsön], American bison. – Danes say [BIsôn].
Buffalo [BAFfölöu], any bison-like animal, e.g. Water buffalo, Cape buffalo.
Wisent [VIsènt], European bison. – Bisons weigh up to 1.000 kg, and wisents weigh 800-900 kg.

Driving Directions.
In Almindingen [ALménéngön], on the Rönne-Svaneke road, you locate (King) Christian X's Vej:
From the eastern forest-entrance to Almindingen you drive only 800 meter toward Rönne [RÖNnö].
From the Âkirkeby [âKIRköby] road-connection in the middle of Almindingen you drive 2,9 km toward Svaneke [SVANnökö].
Then straight on south along Chr. X's Vej for 1,6 km (watch out for holes in the asphalt). Now you enter the 200 hectare Bison-Wood via a cattle grid (stock grid, cattle guard, vehicle pass, Texas gate, stock gap, cattle stop, Danish: färist). After 1,2 km you leave the Bison-Wood via another cattle grid, and you are on your own in a maze of secondary roads and byways south of Almindingen, leading wherever. – Enjoy.

200 Hectare – a Square of Area.
One hecto = 100 items of the following designation, exempli gratia: gram, are, liter, meter.
One are = 100 square meter = 10 x 10 meter.
One hectare = 100 are = 10.000 square meter = 100 x 100 meter.
100 hectare = 1.000.000 square meter = 1.000 x 1.000 meter.
200 hectare = 2.000.000 square meter = 1.414 x 1.414 meter.
So, 200 hectare has a square side of nearly one and a half kilometer.
Actually, the bison (wisent) area is a trapezium: 1,0 km x 2,3 km x 0,5 km.

Number of Hits.
Every time my wife and I could find a reason to drive through Almindingen Forest we took the detour to see the bisons. Three times we were lucky to see them (or just one bison): Twice in the southern pasture, and once in the slightly open woodland (sparse undergrowth) near the northern cattle grid.
I can tell you this: The bisons in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming are more concious of their popular appeal, showing off their one ton of sheer muscle-power. They are not camera-shy and pay only moderate regard to tourists.

Rytterknægten and Lille Slot/Pølsesø
Jul 2016 • Family
Don't miss Rytterknægten, the highest point on Bornholm. Free access to climb the tower and get incredible views of Bornholm, Christiansø and even Sweden in fair weather.
Lille Slot at Pølsesø is also worth a stop and a climb plus walk around the lake.

Must experience walks
Jul 2015 • Family
We spend 3-4 hours walking around on the various tracks and had great fun. Eventhough we visited Bornholm in a very vet period, we were lucky with the weather the afternoon we were there.
