Pont d'Espagne are waterfalls located near Cauterets town, in French Pyrenees, in the South of France, near the border with Spain. It is a touristic zone, where you can come with the family and stay all day seeing the waterfalls, which are very nice, doing a picnic, eating or drinking something or only walking and playing in the surroundings. Also, it is possible to catch a cableway and go with it or by walk to Gaube Lake, which is wonderful. For me, this part is too much touristic, so there is full of people, but is is very nice.

We went on a hike from Pont D’Espagne parking lot to Lac de Gaube and on the way back saw this lovely bridge which was the bridge to Spain. The cascades under the bridge were incredible. There is a cafe close by where we had some nice crepes.

No trip to south west France would be complete without visiting the spectacular Pont d'Espagne. Magnificient all year round, it is accessible by car or day-trip with local tours from Lourdes, from the village of Cauterets. A windy mountainous road with stunning views winds its way towards Pont d'Espagne, passing through thermal spa villages on its way. Park your car and wander through the national park, visiting the beautiful waterfall, before taking the cable car to Lac de Gaube. Not one for the faint hearted, this cable car ride is an experience in itself!! Well worth it - after a 10 minute walk to the lake it's breath taking - like something out of the Sound of Music!!! It gets quite busy in Winter and Summer - snowfalls are very heavy - with some great skiing to be had. In the spring and summer, bring a picnic and enjoy everything nature has to offer. It's an inexpensive fabulous way to spend a day.

My wife and I did Cirque de Gavarnie and Pont d'Espagne/LAc du Gaube on back to back days. They are very different experiences and I'm so glad we did both. Pont d'Espagne/Gaube don't need me to tell you how beautiful they are. I will concentrate on advice that our B&B owner gave us. He's a local man and his tips were very useful.
You park in a gigantic parking lot beyond the town of Cauterets. At the gate you get a ticket. TAKE THE TICKET with you because you pay at the big building at the head of the parking lot. There you also can buy tickets for 1) a gondola near the building and, later 2) a ski lift. There also is good information and bathrooms.
SKIP THE GONDOLA unless there are mobility issues involved, but get ski lift tickets. I recommend round-trip on the lift (around 12 Euros). If you take the gondola you miss a wonderful series of waterfalls. You walk up from the building on an asphalt road for approx. 150 meters to a point where the road turns left. Go straight ahead onto a wide, stone-paved path. It winds back and forth through lovely woods past the various falls. It's definitely uphill, but not too steep. After 15 minutes or so you reach the ski lift.
The lift ride is about 10 minutes and ends at the Belvedere. It is right around the corner to the right as you get off the lift. The views are amazing. Beyond the ski lift, the path to Lac du Gaube goes up steadily for 15-20 minutes on a wide, dry path with views steeply down into the river valley. Then, after the height of land, the path goes gently down to the lake.
The lake is quite lovely, surrounded by steep cliffs. There are two paths around the lake. The right-hand path goes much further, although the views aren't as great. The left-land path, which doesn't extend as far, reveals sharply pointed peaks above the lake's cliffs. There is a very nice little cafe at the base of the lake. We had beer/wine and a very good light meal. Service was great and the prices were quite reasonable.
The views going back down the ski lift were gorgeous. At the base of the lift, if you want an easier trek back to the parking lot, take the asphalt road. You still get good waterfall views and it's a lot easier if (like me) you are nursing old knees.

The cable broke down on 30th Aug 2017 causing a 1 3/4 hour delay to our trip down to Le Cauteret for the second cable care journey to the Pont de L'espagne.
As the cable car was not repaired until 3.30 hours, the cable car at le Cauteret was closed when got there so we could not get a refund. It was the last day of our holiday!
I am looking for a refund for the two tickets for the second part of the journey . My ticket number is OS-2124981. Otherwise I will be going through my bank to recover the money

A marvelous place, you can't think of not visiting. It’s indescribable and I can’t show anyone a photo that can describe the place: the scenery, the waterfalls, the sound of the water, all the different views, the pureness of nature…

This town has a number of trails to suit pretty much everyone, even it's local short walks across beautiful stone bridges spanning rivers and valleys are amazing. It has a vibrancy you wouldn't expect to find somewhere so tucked away in the mountains either. Traveling here by road will give you what are, frankly, some of the most majestic views in Europe overlooking the huge valleys and slops of the Pyrenees,

We are husband wife (66 and 67) and although the trail is rough going, we managed it very well. The estimated time to walk from the car park is 1hr 15mins, however we did it in an hour with stops for photos. To reach the lake was the “ icing on the cake “ . So peaceful and beautiful.
The walk up and back was stunning through the forest, with the gushing waterfalls and birds.
We did not eat at the cafe, but just bought cool drinks. The waitress was happy to refill our water bottles at no charge.
This walk is a must if visiting Cauterets (a 7 Klm drive from the town).
Parking costs €6.50 for vehicle. I think for all day but check this out first.

So much to see and explore, we came back the next day. A challenging but fun hike up to the Pont D'espagne leads to the falls, bridge and a cafe- then you can continue on hiking a bit. There's a turn off to head to Lac de Gaube, which is the most beautiful Mountain Lake!!!! So worth it- an hour walk each way. But plan to stay awhile!

At the confluence of 2 strong waterfalls, an 19th century old bridge stands proud. We took the long mountain walk by the water bed, le chemin des cascades, and arrived there exhausted but thrilled. Victor Hugo admired this place and was absolutely right. Many strong streams and waterfalls, huge trees standing as sentinels by the granite rock bed.
Tips: go early before it's hot. Slight rain can't affect the fun, you are in the forest and the canopy will protect you.
There is a good restaurant there serving quality french sandwiches (pate!). Lac de gaube is a must, by the telecabin.
Consider returning by bus €4.5 a ticket) at specific hours (check schedule, in summer is 15-17-19)

D'avance merci
