German massive fortifications high up on a hill in the west of the city, erected 1899-1906, now maintained by a conservation society. Opens in the afternoon for guided tours, available in French and German. Huge area for walking around, or rather on top, of the bunkers and underground barracks. Definitely worth a visit, friendly staff, unpaved road on the last few hundreds meters/yards. The city of Thionville doesn't really seem to support or advertise this historic highlight.

An old military place from the 1900's. Enjoy a visit into the fort and / or a walk all around the place in the nature. There are some very nice rooms at first level where you can see rare equipments and material such as a full V1 rocket from second world war. See the kitchen, the bedrooms, the gunsmith room, all the equipments to protect from the combat gases used by the soldiers serving in the place during 70 years...
Do not forget to wear a warm suit !!

This fort was built before the Maginot line and was incorporated into the Maginot fortifications, and so uprated and strengthened to meet the standards of the day.
You can visit the interior on certain days where a local guide (French speaking only) will show you around the huge interiors; this normally takes around 1.5 hours.
The outside and whole hill top can be explored with care as there are still open trenches and lots of old barbed wire around. Take care. Leave your car at the bottom by the old barracks as the road can be closed at any time.
A very interesting and evocative place that cost huge amounts of money and never saw action.
No facilities are available on site.
