Disappointed

The collection of this museum may well be stupendous but how could I tell? I could not even discern the year or any timeline for the artifacts displayed as I do not speak French. No dates are displayed. I feel some effort should be given to foreign visitors who do not speak the language but this museum is not willing to help out.

Pretty good

It is pretty good but average given that there are bigger museums in the area. In any case, it is worth a visit if time permits.

A museum preserving wonderful treasures in a memorable building.

About 40 minutes by train from the centre of Paris, this is well worth a visit for anyone interested in medieval history. The château itself is very impressive, located on a high plateau, with stunning views of Paris. The museum holds many fascinating treasures (e.g., jewellery from the tomb of the Merovingian queen Arégonde). Artefacts are displayed in a rather old-fashioned way, however, with tiny, hard-to-read labels and a confusing numbering system. The general explanations at the entrance to each room are clear; but there's little effort to link what's in the display cases to these more general overviews. Most displays are labelled in French only. There are no "interactive" displays, and little of interest to young children. Improvements to the displays are under way, though, and in time they may make the museum more user-friendly.

Old-fashioned, yet fantastic exhibit of artefacts

We visited the archeology museum in September 2019.
The museum is easily accessible by RER A, about 20 minutes from Étoile.
A visit takes about 90 minutes and cost 7€.

The museum is housed in a former castle and the surroundings are great for the exhibit on display.

The period covered is essentially from homo erectus to the iron age, with some early middle ages.

Not much on cave paintings but the collection of stone tools is mind blowing, and the changes in the technics over time are well explained by long texts.

This is where the museum could improve : only a fraction of the descriptions are in English and there are no audio guides. So if your command of the French language is limited and you only have a passing interest in archaeology, I would suggest a pass.

I liked this museum, but those who do not read French and don’t already have some understanding of prehistoric artifacts may find it rough going, as explanations are almost entirely in French only.

Nested in the beautiful Chateau de St-Germain, a very interesting museum that covers archeological findings from France from all ages. The whole family found it very interesting.

Great archaeological Museum on France and the world beyond

Using the Paris Metro we took it to the end of the line and had a delightful day exploring this royal castle, not to be missed. The artifacts cover all time periods, and what used to be the Great Hall has the bonus of worldwide archeological .
exhibits. A bargain at 7 euros, and check out the huge forest and Gardens. They even moved a megalithic passage tomb into the former moat of the castle.

Great Hall is worth the trip

Very interesting archeology museum a short train ride from Paris. Unfortunately the displays do not have English language descriptions but just viewing them is worthwhile. Incredible ancient Gold artifacts, as well as a wide selection of Bronze Age materials. The Great Hall itself is worth the visit.

Interesting museum in a mini Versailles. Worth it for the building and grounds.

This museum is located in a grand castle (chateau) that is easily accessable from Paris just steps from the Saint Germain en Laye RER A subway station. It is truly a mini-Versailles with much of the feel of Versailles without massive crowds. Indeed, I think the good burgers of Saint Germain should market this as Le Petit Versailles. The chateau houses the museum, so it does not have rooms furnished in period furniture like Versailles. If you don't have the time, tickets, or the stomach to visit crowded Versailles, this is definitely the thing to do. The grounds are very nice and extensive with lots of sculpted trees, although not as many flowers as other French gardens.

The museum itself will be exciting for archeology enthusiasts, but it is all in French, so make sure you have your Google Translate app working on your phone. However, it is definitely an old-style museum with lots of artifacts in glass cases with lots of print explaining them. Kids will get bored very quickly, and none of the exhibits are aimed at them.

Good selection of prehistoric artifacts.

Good selection of artifacts -- carvings, paintings, ironwork, much of it from the Paleolithic period. Would have like to have more of the information available in English, or even an English language headset.
