About
The Île-de-France Prehistory museum is a museum in the département of Seine-et-Marne that has a regional outlook. It presents the prehistory of the Paris region, from the first vestiges providing evidence of human presence to the end of the Gallic period. The bare cast concrete and glass building is the work of the architect and town planner Roland Simounet. With its six inner gardens, it stands in undergrowth scattered with granite rocks and is fully open to the surrounding natural environment. It is registered in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments and has been awarded the French "20th Century Heritage" label.

Excelent museum

A very nice journey in the prehistory of the Iles de France. The building is built to be a musem. This makes it a perfectly adapted place to the needs of any kind of exhibition. The forest around is visible trough large windows and the visiting seems like a walk in the park. The objects displayed are fascinating, while the complementary text, images, movies and the replicated items and archaeological sites are stunning. The entrance fee is only 5 💶 😊

The museum is well laid out with many artifacts, drawings & photographs, and external displays of ancient flora that would have been around there in pre-historic times (mainly from Australia and New Zealand). There was a good film and, as it was aa August Friday afternoon, a talk on the changes from stone age, through bronze to pottery, again, with artifacts that were passed around for all to examine. The finale was getting the children to grind their own wheat which they could take away with them (it would have resulted in a very tasty, thimble-sized roll).
At the entrance to the gardens was a panel that described the site in French, English and German: it would make the visit even better if the descriptions inside were also in 3 languages, not just French.
The children were free and, as we were pensioners, we only paid a reduced fee of 3 Euros each.

Prehistoric Ile-de-France ...

We heard about it from French friends & since we enjoy the La Brea Tar Pits / G. Page Museum, thought we'd see it since in the area. So glad we did as the collection is huge, well laid out & presented, and is very understandable, even if primarily in French. Nice film regarding early humans in area. Loved the way they brought the outdoors / greenscape into the museum and exhibits. Educational & enjoyable. ...
