WW1 Belleau Wood and American Monument in Château-Thierry - Day trip from Paris

5 reviews
To understand the history of World War I, few experiences are more rewarding than visiting the actual French battlefields where soldiers fought for their lives. With this guided tour from Paris, history enthusiasts can see where US Marines fought the German soldiers in Belleau Wood. Visit actual trenches and bomb craters, see the graves in the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, and stop at the Devil Dog Fountain—all with a guide to lead the way.

Great calm park (except on week-ends) by foot or cycling. Meet birds and relax walking around and along the Marne river.

9 of us, all adults and teenagers came to Paris to visit Disney. We stumbled upon this place and it was just wonderful. Free parking, lots of activities for kids, slides, mini golf, football shoot out, all free. We spent most of our time by the man made beach chilling out with some ice cream ~€3. There is also a boat rental, €40 for 5 people, although we ran out of time. There are free toilets which are very clean, and security at the entrance which made us feel safe and secure. It's approximately 20 minute walk tot he cathedral. Definitely worth a visit.

We stayed in Meaux for an overnight stop driving between the south of France and Disneyland. We visited the park to let the children run off some steam after a long drive. There is a man made beach along the side of the river and children were swimming in there. It was very busy with (I assume) locals, using it as a free outing. There were fences around the play/beach area and there were security guards doing bag searches, I assume to stop people taking alcohol in. We didn't have swimming things so didn't stay for long. Our children were bored with the play equipment after about 20 minutes so we set off to find ice-cream in the town. I probably wouldn't visit again.

We parked here for free and walked into town centre to see markets (Saturday morning). Park is very large with woodland running trails, riverside walk and fitness equipment (eg pull up bars, balance beam). There is a children's playground near the car park with slides etc for age up to 10 years. Next to the playground is a man made sandy beach which was popular with toddlers. Bring your bucket and spade! Toilets on site too.
