We were travelling across France on a nostalgia visit and we decided to visit Compiegne and the famous Clairiere de l'Armistice in the forest nearby. We were particularly interested, as our parents had been there in the 70s and talked of a railway carriage in a clearing guarded by forbidding-looking soldiers. We were therefore surprised to see that the carriage... More

We really enjoyed our visit here and when you look at all the displays it really transports you back in time. Both adults and kids enjoyed the displays.

An important stop on our tour of World War II sites and this was an amazing place to visit. I didn't realise how stirring this would feel but it was spine tingling to know what had happened here in both the first and second World Wars.

This place is so important in the history of 2world wars and is a must visit if in the area .It is a tranquil setting with some statues in the outside groups and approach to the famous railway carriage. The entry fee is very reasonable around £5 for the amount of information, exhibition of equipment, letters, photos and other exhibits .It attracted a... More

Set in the forest in lovely surroundings. 10 km walk from imperial palace through forest. Need good map for forest route. We returned by side if river. More interesting but last part was past industrial Compiegne. Good museum and learnt new interesting facts

Here in the clearing you can see the place of the armistice signing in 1918, and then see France's humiliation when Germany forced France to sign the surrender. Nearby is a museum with the train replica and an informative museum showing the events of world war 1.

This place is easy to find and well signposted. There is plenty of parking. It is such an evocative space that everyone has seen on old newsreels. It is also strangely quiet with no birdsong. There is an excellent museum and an exact replica of the First World War Armistice carriage. The original was destroyed in a bombing raid in... More

A site of historical importance in all of our history. It is just a place of quiet and calm with a deep sense of what happened here - in both wars. The photograph section is one of the most moving places I have been in. It brings you face-to-face with some of the realities of WW1. And it gives you... More

At the museum of 'Clairiere de l'Armistice located in a forest a few km outside the city stands on the site where is was originally used a detailed replica of the railway carriage in which the Armistice to end the First World War was signed. Wrapped around which are some exhibits to the First World War including a good collection... More

Just a quick detour from the highway, and you're in a beautiful, tranquil, and historical site. The walk from the parking lot is easy and shaded. We did not tour the tiny museum, but instead enjoyed walking through the park-like setting and taking in this little bit of history.
