A visit to Barbizon is well worthwhile if you are in the Fontainebleau area. Loads of good eating places and lots of paintings made of mosaic line the High Street but also the musee de Ganne a little ex aubèrge which has been kept partly as it was when all the impressionist artists were in the area. Very small but interesting and only 3euros entry. See this for a little while and then head into the forest to see what the artists were so fascinated by. Wonderful walks - best forest in the Ile de France

The museum has been created in the Auberge Ganne, frequented by the group of pre-Impressionnists that are known as the School of Barbizon. I thought the chaotic, friendly atmosphere was conveyed well (and all for 2 euros for us seniors!). My wife wanted even more paintings displayed, and had reservations about the 30 minute video, but I thought that it was all a good introduction to the Barbizon artists and made me want to read up on them at home. (There are lots of modern-day artists touting their wares in the village - OK if you like modern art. We found the woods nearby far more interesting than the village - the combination of trees, sand and rocks that delighted the Barbizon painters.)

Located in picturesque little Barbizon, this museum nicely outlines the stages of the Barbizon school of art. Well exhibited & represented in their displays and offerings. This is site to learn more about thes important painters....

Our guide and driver took us to the quaint village of Barbizon today which was great since we had just gone through the Musee d'Orsay two days ago. To see where the Impressionist painters lived, worked, ate and painted on the walls and furniture was very interesting. Many of the paintings are on display. You must go.

Overview of the history of the artist colony at Barbizon. These artists were the precursors of the impressionists. They were renegade thinkers who grew beards: they wanted to paint forest scenery, farm landscapes and working people. The museum used to be an inn mainly frequented by these artists (the Barbizon school). A rather long video gives the explanations and then you can see the inside of the building. OK but not extraordinary.

We liked that they try to recreate the history with old furnitures but for a school which host 30 painters, very few amount of paintaing and history to discover

As so much talent flowed from the Barbizon artists it is unfortunate that this Museum owns very few pictures by the best of them. The cadre could be good to show so much better more and I wonder whether the municipality should not be playing a more active role in achieving this. I would suggest that the village suffers from the limited selection of really good art.

I stumble upon this place when I went to Barbizon in Oct 2017 during the break of business trip. The museum is relatively small but displayed a lots of paintings and some of the walls are also painted by the students, who live and study in Barbizon.
Very impressive collections of famous painters of France and from overseas for a small town.
