If you’ve been in France for a while you’ve probably seen a lot of churches. This church overlooking the town of Joigny is, on the one hand, another. But on the other is interspersing perched within the walled citadel overlooking the town and the River Yonne. It has a lot of charm and an impressive organ - and worth walking from the church to the cemetery (away from the river) as you continue exploring. Nice enough.

We stopped in Joigny for a coffee break on our way from Burgundy to Isle de France. We climbed up the hill to see the church which was originally the chapel of a castle built in 13th century. The church was rebuilt in 16th century and has an amazing compartmented ceiling. It sits in what from 11th century was a strategic position on the plateau of the forest. Outside is St Jean’s Gate and from there views down to the river Yonne. Nearby is another church St Andrews which also has an interesting history. We wandered around the winding streets to look at the many half timbered buildings. The town had the feel of having been a prosperous town at some time in the past but needing some investment now. Back down by the river there was a gathering in the large market hall to judge the wines of the region. Many speeches and an array of stalls amongst which was one celebrating the town’s link with Godalming. How marvellous to stumble on these events and people.

We think this is an underratted location. Both churches in the old town are impressive. Walking through the various streets (with a lot of historic buildings that have not been renovated) is truly a step back in time. It reminds me of visiting towns in old East Germany right after the wall fell. Truly revealing. If you have time make sure you travel just outside of town to the hill/historic observation point which overlooks the town/river to take in the overall area view/use the picnic benches etc.
